Line capture is taking 5 (or more) if you put you stones on the two ends of the other players 5 (or more). See here step 30:
https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=569432471
Break the line is when you manage to capture 2 (or in case of keryo 3) stones, after the other player formed a 5 (or more). See step 74-75:
https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=573626173
Hope this helps.

Hi Frank,
that is what I say: you don't see it. Because there was something like "Capture the line" or "Line capture" as an other option of "Overtime capture", when you could capture 5 (or more) stones.
I am confused. What would "capture the line" mean that is different from "Break the line"?

Good lord.
"Line capture" ... is not Pente anymore. That isa completely different game. How would anyone ever defend against such a thing if any number of stones in a line can be captured? Oram I still not understanding?
Keep in mind, I am a multi-time champion at this game in various different formats and venues. And yet I am still puzzled here.
(Those links did not work for me.)

Yes, this is almost like a different game. But that's okay — it can be really interesting and pushes you out of your usual patterns, encouraging a different way of thinking.
By the way, you can't just remove any number. For example, you can't take 4

Taking 3 in 'keryo' mode — now that leads to really long games.
I actually organized a tournament with line capture and self capture, and I think the matches were super interesting and enjoyable; it was a real challenge to think differently.
Personally, I'm a bit sad it's no longer around — it was my favorite.
You should try it once (I would be glad to play/assist), if ufm allows it.

Just to be clear, I am familiar with all the usual variants. Swap, G-pente, D-pente, Poof, Boat, Keryo, etc. As I said, multi-time tournament winner online and in real life. I played on all the Pente sites back in the day. Dweebo's, IYT, brain King, PBem, etc.
I still do not understand what is meant by "Line capture". I understand what "capture across the line" means. Can you please give me an example in this thread, since those links are not working? Use X and O for the pieces:
Normal capture: XOOX (The two O stones are captured when the second X is placed)
Keryo capture: XOOOX (The three O stones are captured when the second X is placed)
"line capture": ???
(I have not found Keryo games to be much longer than non-Keryo.)

It is xooooox 5 o stones captured after 2nd x placed. It is an overtime capture.
Keryo with line capture makes the game real long...

ahhh !
NOW I understand. Thank you
Okay, THAT is interesting.
I have to think this over. Is it ever possible to win by completing a line rather than captures? I do no think I have ever seen a "pente" open on both sides, and if one end has an opponent stone, the opponent can just capture the entire 5-stone line?
And, with Keryo and the overtime line capture, wouldn't someone win on captures fairly quickly? I would need to experiment I suppose.

You forget about the 10 or 15 stones capture rule. Capturing a line means you get 5 (or more) points!
And yes, then the opponent can capture then 5 stones.
But one thing is very important: self-capture is only valid for 2 (or in case keryo 3) stone self-captures, butnot for 5/pente.

What I meant is, if overtime line captures are allowed, does anyone ever win by making 5 in a row? No, right? It would always end by captures, right?
