I prefer the Arena format. It’s more enjoyable. The other players in my household agree. Guess I’ll be playing more cardboard games. Not the end of the world.
I'm struggling I must be honest to see why it's more enjoyable to play Arena just against people in your house than Simple Games against the same people, but I guess if it makes all the difference then fine play cardboard games. It's not like any of us can play you anyway if you mainly want to play in your own household group!
For what it's worth i play simple games with my wife if we play together, And we each play Arena if on our own so wanting to play others. We've played over 10,000 games on BGA like that now and love it.

I don’t want to play exclusively with my household members but two of us like to compete with each other in the arena standings/format. I just think the rule is overly punitive. Are people really colluding to become Arena champion? Get a life.

Yes, they do, look into the tichu subforum and see how many cheaters were detected already.

I'd like to know why I've been paired with the #3 ranked guy in Beyond the Sun 4 times in a row. Is that part of the algorithm?
Maybe you two are the only people playing it at the time today?
I guess that's possible. I wish the algorithm would make us wait a bit longer in order to pair us with an opponent that we haven't faced instead.
