This looks pretty good! It's obviously not foolproof, but at least one would now need effort to actively ruin tournaments, of a level I doubt the relevant players are going to exert. And if the problem persists, at least it ought to be fairly easy to point at an actively malicious activity pattern, which one would hope makes for a bannable offense.

I would put this under report a bug. Then I would come back here and edit my post for other people to add agreement so BGA works on it. I don’t know they are monitoring everything that we say here, And you have a valid problem they need to address. I would also try using the Support email because this is something they are actively working on.

There still is one flaw with this system. It's too easy to recover karma by playing a bunch of quick games. Also, the karma penalty for getting kicked from a turn-based tournament game is too low (currently I believe it's only -4).

Improvements:

- Increase the karma penalty for getting kicked from a turn-based tournament game to -10 or -20.

- Your tournament karma is calculated differently than regular karma. If you run out of time in a tournament game, -1 to your tournament karma for 90 days. If you get kicked from a tournament game for running out of time, -5 to your tournament karma for 90 days. +1 to your tournament karma (for 90 days) for finishing a tournament without any time penalties. Your tournament karma is your regular karma minus penalties.

There's also another potential problem scenario in multiplayer elimination tournaments. Someone is forced to withdraw just before the final, and now there aren't enough players in the final. Solution: Don't auto-withdraw people in the last or next-to-last round OR promote someone who was eliminated in the next-to-last-round to take their place.

If you are expelled from a tournament game, the penalty is the same than a regular game (-10 or -20).

-4 is for "no show" / "forfeit", which has much less consequences for the other players as you did not even start the game.

If it's supposed to be like this then it is buggy because right now there's only -4 if you get expelled from a turn-based tournament game.

In addition to that, if you time-out and the game reaches the maximum duration (but nobody expelled you but the other players instead hope for you to finish the game even if using their time), the game is abandonend and you don't even get a penalty at all.

This can be seen in you-know-who's reputation log (but need to scroll down a few pages to the time when there was actually still enough karma left). Those are all tournament time-outs and not no-show (which is a concept only valid for real-time-tournaments i guess). The few games with -10 or -20 are non-tournament games.

Yes, in addition the points results / standings are different.

In this game, someone ran out of time but received a -4 karma penalty.

How is "number of tournaments" calculated? If it's a knockout tournament or multiplayer elimination tournament, it shouldn't count towards your tournament limit if you've already been eliminated but the tournament isn't over yet.

I always thought it was odd that, on the "Play Now"->"Tournaments" tab, it shows"You Participated In This Tournament" (i.e. were eliminated but it isn't over yet) above "You are Participating in this touranment" (i.e. not eliminated yet).
