Round robin matches all start simultaneously 👍
@mrdoctor When you say that, do you mean that each player's all matches will start at the same time? That there's no way to get all first matches to be played before match 2 etc?
Don't know how to interpret your thumbs-up - do you find that being a good feature? :)
As far as I'm aware there's no way to make round-robin matches sequential rather than simultaneous, but in saying that I've not tried to change any tournament settings to 100% test that theory - maybe you can? Any premium member can set up a tournament.

My thumbs-up was just a thumbs-up. I don't feel in any way positively or negatively in the way round-robins work on BGA - it is how it is, and it'd be far far down my list of changes I'd like to make to BGA's tournament system so I haven't really given it any thought.
Thanks for your answer!
I've learnt the difference between Round Robin and Swiss since last post :)
Swiss is working as expected, with games played in rounds.
I agree that there are more pressing issues to fix - fair scoring in Multiplayer Elimination for instance....

mrdoctor wrote: 12 November 2023, 19:14 Did that definitely work? The tournament didn't have enough sign-ups to actually start. Have you got an example where a tournament was set up like this, started, and it went as planned?
To follow up, yes, here is a round-robin tournament I set up as a test of staggered start times: https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=251291

The tournament began today and it is running as expected. There are 6 entrants, so everyone plays 5 games. For each player, 3 games began a couple of hours ago when the tournament started, a 4th game is supposed to begin on December 8 at 23:00 PST, and a 5th game is supposed to begin on December 24 at 21:15 PST. Here is a screencap of the start times from when I set up the tournament last week: https://snipboard.io/HQ0FBq.jpg

Here is the dialogue box that I got when I personally joined the tournament: https://snipboard.io/mybji0.jpg

And here are two screencaps of how the tournament page looks now, shortly after the tournament started:

I set up a round-robin followed by single elimination tournament and specified a couple weeks between each game start (as the above post stated) and all the round-robin games started at the same time.

Why not link to it, and maybe Mathew5000 can help you troubleshoot? He seems to be the only person who's successfully worked out how to do it.

Good point. Here's the link https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=254849
And it still shows the "schedule" as of today as:

Code: Select all

02/16/2024 at 08:30: Ark Nova Champagne 2P February 2024 Challenge (1 matches)
03/02/2024 at 08:45: Ark Nova Champagne 2P February 2024 Challenge (1 matches)
03/18/2024 at 08:30: Ark Nova Champagne 2P February 2024 Challenge (3 matches)

Hmm, I don't know. One thing I would remark is that if you go to each group (for example, https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=269918 or https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=269919 ), on those pages the "Tournament agenda" is blank. But I don't know what the software thinks it will do with the tournament agenda for the "main tournament". Perhaps it's going to wait until Feb. 16 at 08:30 before beginning Stage 2 (the single-elimination stage) even if all groups are complete before then.

But it's not what you intended, so maybe report it as a bug at https://boardgamearena.com/bugs

Hi All,

I followed the instructions about Editing Match Dates given by Mathew5000 here:

https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewto ... 49#p151349

I tried it & it doesn't appear to work in my configuration of having groups at the first stage and single elimination at the second stage. I tried to stagger the start dates for each player in each group of four so that each player got one opponent at a time, but everyone got three opponents simultaneously just the same as I had experienced without using the Edit Match Dates option. My tournament had exactly 64 players and 16 groups so it wasn't a matter of there being an odd number. I did manage to get the draw for the groups and the first matches to start simultaneously but that was the same as happened without using the Edit Match Dates option. If anyone can get it to work I'd be very grateful if they would kindly explain exactly what they did to get their tournament staggered dates to run as planned!

Thanks for looking at this. I had already upvoted https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=8591 which I think covers it. (Please upvote if you think this is a problem.)

I went ahead and reported this as bug #116909: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=116909

I included a link back to this forum thread. Feel free to add comments at my bug report, and vote for it. (The other report mentioned in this thread, #8591, is about a distinct though related point.)
