Exactly! But not "then", it's happening right now. The game is automatically starts and other players should wait until my timer expire. They become angry and kick inactive player from the game instead of aborting the game (I guess 1 of 20 stays calm and aborts the game).
Such games shouldn't even starts. As for me, correct behavior when some player haven't accept game for some time (15s?):
1. Don't start the game
2. Stop searching for inactive player
3. Continue searching for active player

Play turn based instead of real time. No problem then.

That only works if everyone else plays turn-based too. Hasn't been my experience.

The problem is that you ARE NOT NOTIFIED when the game starts. NO SOUND NO NOTHING
you will say there is a sound. Usually there is nothing. The sounds are suppressed somehow
Why not send an email / notification / sms anything
i can even pay for this.
I lost many many times because there was no sound and in those 2 mins or so that you are waited to move i did not check also that tab !!!

Is not annoying, is frustrating !

I was trying to play a game but the loading page got stuck on "Opening the box". No amount of refreshing got me into the game, so I was timed out and lost karma. (as a side note I don't know if there's a way to appeal this?)

My suggestion would be that the "expel" option isn't made available until all players have made their first move, so that abandoning is the only option. Or have an "accept" button before you see your opponents (but after the game has fully loaded).

And getting worse. I've been expelled three times in a week when BGA made no apparent (audible) notification that my game was ready. This is beyond frustrating. If the developers can't figure out how to notify properly when someone doesn't have the active tab open, then they need to disable the ELO/AES penalty. Or just treat "expel" as "abandon".

Reupping this. About a half hour again I tried to open an Arena table, clicked a button on my browser, then went back and tried to cancel the opening only to be told that I'm not waiting for a table after all. Twenty minute later a game started with me anyway, but without any notification whatsoever, and then I got expelled. There was no reason for the table to open after I had canceled it, and there's no reason for a game to have started without some kind of audible warning. I was on another tab and had no idea any of this was happening until I clicked over and saw the expulsion.

This should never happen.

Today I was in good humor, wanted to get some fun in competition. But got only two leaves and 57% karma. Without any notification... even tab was not winking!
I hate BGA! That's real achievement!
