When you play the phisical game you don't get to know exactly how many cards and cars everyone has (which you intead get to easily see on the scoreboard on BGA) unless you request a count every turn, and you could do the same with the drawing deck, no rule forbids it, so what are we talking about?

I doubt you would need to know how many cards are left with half a deck left, so I suppose you can look at the card pile and guestimate how many cards are left within 2 card error at those critical decisions. This is like estimating how many decks of cards are left if you are trying to find the true count in blackjack.

When we play to TTR at 4 or 5, we are quickly at phase where the deck become empty and it occurs several times.
It is important to know exactly how many cards are in the deck to play cards rather than to take cards in the deck.
There are 110 train car cards and each player will take cards to have 44 cards (in hand or already played) or more.
At 3 players, 3x44=132 cards, the deck empty is also encountered. At 2, it should never occurs 2x44=88 cards.
But at 4, with 4x44=176 cards and at 5, 5x44=220 cards needed, the deck empty, that must be reshuffled, occurs often.
