desert, forest, island, jungle, mallee, marsh, moor, mountain, plains, prairie, sandhill, savannah, scrub, sea, wood. Which is the odd one out?

These all seem fine to me; they're all terms that refer to a habitat or geographic feature. I'm not sure which one you're referencing. Maybe "wood" versus "woods", though that term isn't listed on any version of my physical Cartographer cards and I don't think it's in the BGA version either.

Precisely. Wood Stork and Wood Duck don't count towards Cartographer, even though all the other habitat names do.

Oh, I get it now. Perhaps because they're not referring to "woods" themselves as in the general habitat (hence my making the distinction between "wood" vs "woods") but rather like an individual tree. Otherwise something like a treecreeper or roadrunner would count for this as well.

How quickly your plans changed from not banning any more birds other than the power 4 to banning the Wood Duck as well. Love being lied to.

We should probably start a pool on when the Pileated Woodpecker gets banned and then the Chipping Sparrow and California Quail after that.
