Why is the TRUTH offensive?

I didn't say that I did feel that way. I wouldn't report something like that, but I can certainly see someone reporting it because....they are allowed to use all their time no matter what. Period. And BGA has extremely sensitive standards for negative statements or what could be perceived as negative, like "I think you could have made a different move there." This has been discussed at length many times. It is not a question of what you or I or a "normal" person would find harassing or offensive. It is a question of what the most sensitive person on the planet would find offensive. Even if you don't like that standard, it's pretty easy to stay on the correct side of that line (usually by saying nothing).

First of all, you can't know that the person is stalling intentionally unless they actually admit it in the chat, so that accusation alone could be offensive on the occasions that you are wrong. Second, as I said above, we don't get to decide what someone else finds offensive. I mean, I could find it offensive that you put everything in bold type for some unknown reason. You could find it offensive that I called that out because you identify as a bold typer. People come running to the forums all the time (or use to before they started banning people for challenging their moderations) asking for opinions of whether what got them banned was offensive. Like calling someone a "pumpkin." I'm not kidding. It's not up for a vote.

As I have written before:
I'm going to put this plainly. Anything, and I mean ANYTHING, you say that is even remotely negative to the most sensitive person in the universe can get you moderated. Is this an objectively fair policy? Maybe not. But it is a pretty black and white line which makes it easier for them to manage moderation because they don't want to get into nuanced debates about whether calling someone a "pumpkin" (as someone else reported) is offensive.

I'm not aware of anyone who is a fan of the policy and no one is saying you have to like it. But it is easy to follow. Just think of that tattletale classmate. You know, the one who would run to the teacher and whine if you even looked in their direction the wrong way. That is your audience. That's the benchmark.

Once, no. Probably even twice, no. But repeatedly, as was described in the initial post? Probably. Would I go so far as to report them? Probably not. But I probably would red thumb the player repeatedly asking that question (I might also red thumb the slow player if it was obvious they were being slow on every turn).

That said, the initial post also says that the players were insulting to the OP who tried to stand up for the slow players. That's possibly the point at which I'd consider reporting (depending what "insulting" means). You're free to politely raise an issue (and I'd call the above message polite enough, but I am not a mod). But others are free to express how they feel too, and not agreeing with you is not an excuse to insult anyone. Finish the game, red thumb if the behaviour bothers you, and move on.

This is what real time tables are for. Plus, the fastest possible game in turn based mode is already what, 24 moves per day? That is an astonishing rate, if you're really so bored, go start another table for heavens' sake. Or consider getting away from your computer once in a while.

I believe this is usually in reference to real-time tables, and certainly is here (there was a comment about people waiting until the last 10 seconds of their turn to make a move) - what people are looking for is a speed faster than real-time fast. Which is a reasonable request, but unfortunately at the mercy of the BGA developers/admin.

This whole thread has been about real time. From the OP: "This was in a "normal" speed game and the other players were well within the time, they just weren't playing almost instantly like the rude players seemed to want." "Normal" is a real time speed setting. Even in 24 moves/day turn-based no one can expect "instant" moves.

What Manny (and others) want is something even faster than the real-time fast setting.

MANNY-OLIVIA wrote: 19 December 2023, 21:01 There are players on this site who deliberately play slow.

They wait until there is only 10 seconds left of their clock before making a move.
And the response to this is giving them a red thumb. The response is not berating them, because they can play slow for whatever reason, even malicious ones. The fact that they are allowed to use all their time is even in the message you get when you see the pop-up that says "my opponent isn't playing. What should I do?" So no, you don't just get to decide you think they are doing it deliberately (instead of spilling coffee in their laps. or being distracted by a child, or playing at work and trying to hide it, or innumerable other reasons) and harass them about it.

To be clear, I have given red thumbs to people I think took too long to make decisions given the game state, like they only had one valid option. What I have never done is say "what's taking so long? You only have one valid move."
I've also come across players who have obviously delayed their moves (each of them!) deliberately until the last few seconds. I gave them their own medicine - and made them wait as well. The problem was then cured very quickly and they played at a reasonable pace. Of course I red thumbed them afterwards as well.

Thank You to the above 2 Players for their comments.

Red Thumbs & Rudeness will not solve this issue.

A BLITZ SPEED would!

I guess it makes sense now, thanks.
In fairness I do believe that this platform has no handle at all and the entire design is part of the frustration of many players.

The black and white philosophy is very much aligned withhow the rest of how this platform is managed or not managed. It would be way better to avoid moderation in general and allow really sensible people to simply mute their chats.
