What I did was to watch replays of plays from players with high ELO points to see which strategies they do with different kinds of cards. You can also choose to see the games from their POV. I found it very helpful. ☺️

If hearing a player's thoughts on a game as it is played is helpful to you, I have streamed a couple of games in the past month:

I'm ~400elo at the moment, but aiming to hit 500 and hoping to stream some more games along the way.

You can watch my games if you like (currently rank 1).
I´d say there are 2 main winning strategies.

Playing high value birds / many birds : will require decent drawing capacity and lots of food. You will need a way to lay some eggs without spending too many action points in it, like pileated or grackle, or ash throated, or just passively egg laying birds. Bonuses might be easier to fill as you will draw quite a lot and have many birds on the board eventually.

Laying lots of eggs : most common way I´d say. Downside is to find a way to get enough food to fuel the engine. A crow might be enough for the whole game and tucking birds early on will probably grant you victory.

Whatever strategy you choose, drawing a lot early is often times the way to go to get the right cards and then just roll the engine asap. Sacrificing the first round objective is often worth it on the long run.

Cheers

I watch youtube videos haha. That has helped me improve my game a lot with Wingspan. After watching them I went from an average score of 70s to at least 100. I've even been able to hit in the 130-140s every so often. The game is definitely a mixture of skill and luck. If you start off with a bad hand, it's really hard to overcome.

The best way is just look at the current ranking from arena or all time ranking (doesnt matter really much) and then just watch games of the top 5 players. I totally disagree with the 90% variance that is mentioned earlier. There are certain dominant strategies, grass engine is king.(with exception maybe of wood duck/piletead/chipping engine in forest). I can know because i am currently ranked number 1 😉
How did you lose all your Elo?
