I am not an expert by any means, but I thought that the most popular choices among advanced and intermediate players were in that order:
1. Prelude + Venus + Colonies
2. Predulde + Venus + Colonies + Turmoil
3. Prelude
4. Vanilla

I hardly ever see any other combination played. Prelude while not balanced at all, makes the game a lot more fun.

Those might be the most popular intermediate player preferences, but of all the advanced players I've played with, Turmoil is mandatory when playing with Prelude, Venus and Colonies. If not playing will all expansions, most of the advanced players prefer Base+Prelude.

I won't be playing Arena until Corporate is on. Hopefully when the new season starts it will be on.

Venus is best forgotten, in my group circle. it's a very badly designed extension.

I didn't like it much at first either, but colonies are much more fun for me with venus. Obviously game is very random with pvco, but it is has just the right balance between brainburning and straightforward. But yeah venus without colonies is a joke.

Unfortunately when arena mode releases for a game in the 2nd half of a season, the rules and rankings do not reset until the end of the following season meaning no reset after the partial season. This has been a frustration for me in many games and I have never seen an exception made, but perhaps the popularity of this game will make it the first.

The problem with prelude, one thing the variance is way higher, and Point Luna/Vitor OP is a huge problem, it gets worse with each additional expansions. All the new Prelude corps are superior than base game corps, mostly. Venus is the worst because it introduces Manutech. I think the golden age for TM competition is now, once they figured out Corporate Era/2p is the best setting for arena. The new maps are pretty trashy 2, MS/award etc. Which really make you appreciate what the designers were able to accomplish with the base game. TM was just a great game, every way you see it.

+1 to Corporate 2p for next arena season or community will still play on other resources.

I agree. I personally prefer Turmoil but this is how I feel advanced/expert games were played on Heroku app, with the caveat that they had some optional drafting/banlist/rules modifications.
