A rule of thumb is if the tree can grow in nature in your region, leave it out year round. If the tree would suffer damage below a certain temperature (tropicals, subtropicals) bring them in. Junipers, pines, maples, larches, oaks, beech, ash, firs, etc., all rely on winter dormancy to survive. As someone who keeps bonsai, please do NOT bring in your temperate trees; they need ti be outdoors to experience low temperature dormancy over winter.
Only tropical and sub-tropical bonsai should be indoors.

I always get them inside so they don't suffer from the negative temperature we can have here. So i guess it also depends on your place?
