yea when they set up the turnament they pick a time lenght of either minute/hours for real time or days to label it as a turn base, if its turnbased they can select 12 hour window as the playing window and then the play time durning those days is devided by how many players should be in the match to get your time given to each player. in theory it should make every player hit 0 as the time runs out but ussally one player ends up using more time so someone will have time left.
Looks like you got down to your last few mins while he still had 3 hours left so the round only had 3 hours left, then when he used most of that time on those last few turns while you were just under the total time hit 48 hours and ended. shame, looks like you had 1 or 2 turns left each.

in tournaments short turn based games are effectively real time with some leeway built in for real life interruptions.
