I also noticed that when you open a table, there's a "Players around this table now: Chat" button. What does the "around" refer to? Players who sat on the table, or players from the group?
I have seen this pretty frequently and it appears to be just people that are looking at that table right now. They do not have to be signed up. They just have to be on a computer with an open browser on that page at the same time. Like they are considering being part of the game but are not signed up yet

In my experience the second feature was used quite a lot before the automatic tables were introduced. Since then as far as I can remember I haven't received such an invite even once , so no idea how receptive people are to these 'random' invites nowadays.
I like that feature to invite players who are online and have that game as a favorite. I have used it both for inviting and being invited, and would encourage folks to check it out.
