Re: Can't Stop update

Post by euklid314 »

I encountered a bug with the "Manual failure configuration (real-time only)". I already reported it (https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=156236).

But I am interested: What is the use case of this option? Why does this option even exist?
I assume there was a feature request by users to stop the game at this moment of failure such that they can see the numbers and check manually that they have no valid way to combine the dice...

In any case I will not need to use this option in the future but since I did check it out once I encountered a bug that led to stalling of the game.

Well, it was broken. There were many, many bug reports during the last 5+ years that were completely ignored.

At least I am thankful to ufm that he stepped up as a developer and added options and fixed bugs.

Obviously during such a change new bugs will occur. But at the moment we have an active developer that will fix the bugs that newly appeared.

@ufm: You quote bug report #122643 as a reason that you restructured the game logic of the game. I can understand that for bug report #6330, but bug report #122643 seems to report normal game behavior. The user claims that 12 was taken by his opponent and he was still offered to advance on 12, but clearly the number 2 is taken and the number 12 is open. Thus #122643 should have been closed as "no bug".

It is not a bug by itself, but there were other genuine similar reports as well and I closed them as duplicates before examining that report thoroughly.
For example, you can find some turn-based games which have tokens in closed columns.

You didn't answer my question though? I asked if you had changed anything that would affect this.

I do not post a bug report this time because I do not know if the described behavior is as intended.

1) When I advanced in rows 6,7,8 I reached the top of row 7 and I was still in the middle of rows 6 and 8. Since I wanted to test the feature "Added continue warning when at least 1 token is on the top" I chose "Continue". I expected a button that warned me and asked if I indeed wanted to continue. But nothing came but an ordinary roll of the dice and I fell (since I had no 6 or 8 with my roll).

2) Later in the same game I reached the top of my 3rd and final column using only 2 tokens in that round (i.e. 2 ropes were taken in this round, 1 token was still unused). I would have liked to again test the "Continue" button but I did not dare to. My opponent would have thought of me trolling if I gave away my win. Thus I chose "Stop and Save" and was surprised that *then* I got a warning message. It said something like "Are you sure you want to stop. You still have a 3rd, unused token."

You have not mentioned this kind of warning, ufm, namely a warning if one wants to end ones move while one has not used all 3 checkers. If you keep this warning you should deactivate it if one just reached the game winning column. In this case it is normal that one wants to end the game - no warning needed.

Summary: I expected to have warnings when I continue rolling the dice and not warnings when I stop my move. Could you elaborate on which warnings exist at the moment, ufm?

Nothing has been changed, because there were no issues in randomizers at all.

I wanted to edit the player group post, but somehow it was blocked.

Currently there are two warnings:
- A warning popup will appear when a player tries stopping the turn while they have at least 1 unused token.
- A warning popup will appear when a player tries continuing the turn while they have progressed enough to end the game.
Both warnings are there to prevent obvious click mistakes.

Thanks for the clarification.

Then, in your original post you should change your wording from
"Added continue warning when at least 1 token is on the top"
to
"Added continue warning when a game winning token reaches the top".

I understand that a warning each time a token is on the top might be too much. It is not so rare that one wants to continue the turn even if one just has reached the top of one column.

As I wrote, you might consider to restrict the other warning of unused token(s) such that the warning does not appear in game winning situations.

The new animations and visuals are terrible. Don't fix what isn't broken.
