I can only speak for myself, but I can get by on French and so if my opponent responds in French, I would muddle through. Otherwise, I'd use Google Translate.
As a fellow over-thinker who takes excessive time over all written forms (these forum posts, for example!) I am trying to counter my own over-thinking by trying to apply the most generous interpretation. Everyone has their own reasons for how they approach the chat and interactions here - for the most part, I assume they are positive or at the very least, neutral.
