Slight counterpoint: https://imgur.com/a/3nIPbLa

This happened to me playing against a higher rated opponent. I was in the lead for 90% of the game and rushing to finish terraforming. My opponent focused on their engine and managed to skyrocket past me in the last generation. I'm sure that spending a bit more time optimizing and planning my moves better when I had a +40 point lead would have helped my chances but regretfully I was overconfident :)

Albeit this was in a turn-based game but my point still stands. I wouldn't hold it against an opponent who still takes time to try and play optimally despite having a big lead.

Agreed but I think they are referring to a last-generation situation in which the losing player has already passed and the winning player could just pass and end with a win, rather than playing another 15 cards for 30 more points.

You can just concede.

Depends on their intent. Engine building games attract engine builders who likely are not trying to point shame the competion, but finish their engine. If the player is doing a good job with tempo and time, I do not begrudge them finishing their turn.

If I'm in the winning position, I find it sometimes good to just play as much as possible. Sometimes (myself included if I'm being lack luster) people don't take account into final production milestone flips or calc out scenarios where it could cause the game to swing through Awards.

One game of mine: where I appeared to be behind in points by a little over 20 VP, have already passed, and the map was fully terraformed; my opponent had passed without playing cards in their hand/with a decent chunk of MC, probably thinking they have won. Then after production, Thermalist flipped back for me (10 VP swing) and I also flipped Miner (another 10 VP swing) with final greeneries with metals placement bonuses. They ended up narrowing losing.

If I'm significantly up, I won't tank to squeeze every VP out but I also won't pass with actions left over, cards, and capital still left to spend.
