For long games with duration >40 minutes, well, it depends. If I take the 7 "most expected" games on BGA homepage, 5 would have a duration >40 mn, and having them on BGA now makes no sense right now. With some "async" mode it could be possible to have some Agricola-class game here...
Maybe not an "async" mode then, but the possibility to pause the game and come back to it LIVE later.

Really, isn't nice play with async mode, I was on Yukata and I took 5 daya to end a game of China Gold....

Why Agricola Publishers will accept the game only in async?... it's unbeliave that a publisher take this condition... people get most fun and "this strategy tense" when you're playing in real time.

@Oso: maybe I used the wrong term but there is no "publisher's condition" here. We're only discussing about another way to enjoy games online which is a little different, and which can address a different audience.

I personally prefer playing real-time, but with turn based you can:
  • think a long time on a move with no pressure.
  • play a 2 hours long game by giving 5 minutes of your time 1-3 times a day.
  • play many games at the same time.
  • find an opponent for a turn-based game when you can't find an opponent in real-time.
Some players have no time to connect to BGA for a 1 hour gaming session, but they have multiple 5 minutes slots each day when they can play some moves. Turn-based could allow this players to play.

I remain very skeptical because I haven't seen any website where this model has worked yet. Right now, there are around 1000 players online on Board Game Arena, but only 299 on Yucata and 265 on Boiteajeux. Both use turn-based games. I'm afraid this new implementation will tempt people into not playing live. I've played a few games of Dixit on Boiteajeux and some of them lasted 3 months! When it's turn-based, people tend to forget about the game. Maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, but I think people will start losing interest in Board Game Arena if it becomes a carbon copy of other websites.

I hope I'm wrong.

You're all talking as if async is going to replace the current format.

Couldn't it be so that both formats are going to live next to each other? :o. (although i'm guessing that coding each game for both formats might take some time :o)

If it is true that whole site is going to be async from now on i'm not coming back :D

If both modes/formats are going to exist together on this site i hope that tables for the same format go to the same page. Not with big mixture of everything. That'd be to annoying when you join a game and it turns out to be async, with the opponent gone for the next hour (after his turn)!

I don't get this though:
If I take the 7 "most expected" games on BGA homepage, 5 would have a duration >40 mn, and having them on BGA now makes no sense right now. With some "async" mode it could be possible to have some Agricola-class game here...
Why doesn't it make sense to have a long game on this great site! If i'd start a long game i make sure that i'd have enough time to finish it. (Evening game!) I'd be to annoyed if the game kept dragging on for days, or even worse weeks! :D Thats a personal opinion and for sure there is probable quite load of people who'd prefer async mode. But well would be a shame if everything from now on would be async :)

I'm interpreting..., this games are same of "FACE TO FACE".

- Think long time... how many time do you need for think?, really... a something good of "boardgame" is the "pressure".

- Play 2 horas in 1-3 times; when you're face to face you can pause the game, back tomorrow and play 10 minutes... and back the next day again?, when you're playing a long-time game, you should sit in your chair, and play the game 3-4-5-7-10 hours.

- Play many games it isn't good for ELO, because the ELO score change when a game END:

EXAMPLE: I start in 30 minutes 4 games for... Seasons. In all game I start with 1500 ELO, it's true because when I created all game I had this score. I finish the first game and I lost, then my ELO is below for 1500. In ALL other games the opponent can say "I was playing with a 1500... but this player has now... 1477, I will get less ELO if I win, and loss more ELO if I lose. It's same with the 3rd game, 4th game...

- Find opponent, really.... how many people from here play in async?... maybe 1 per each 1000. (I think).

If I have 1 hour free per day, I can't pretend play Monopoly (example)..., it's basic

Well what about playing a game and not finishing it because you will lose? Isn't it a problem?

Well about the elo problem it already happens in Dudo (Perudo). i think if you have been eliminated you shouldn't be able to create a new table of the same game.

Pls don't fix something what s not broken. Main reason I love BGA is because u can play live, with people from all over the world, any time u wish, u always find someone to play somethimes maybe u need to wait a little bit but if u love and wish to play particular game and enjoy it that should not be big problem.

Sentence 'think a long time on a move with no pressure' reminds me immediately on corres chess but in negative way even Ive never played corr chess I dont feel good about it.Where the heck is enjoyment if there is not pressure, thats the reason we love games isnt it, thats the normal thing having pressure in some tricky positions, so u need to love it and deal with it

Thank you
