Interesting theory! I always put it in the middle if I can, as black or white, but it's just because I think it's a good spot to occupy. I rarely try to initiate forming a line with the center ring.

Hi there,

i usually used to play edges in "serious" matches against strong players and sometimes center (or olympic rings) in fun games.
I think, the strategys lead to completely different games. Edge games sometimes end up in a draw or a close 1-0 win because the stones run out.
Center games are very tactical and you have to be very careful not to blunder an almost complete row in 1-2 turn.

While I still think that edge playing is slightly superior in terms of winning chances, if your opponent plays center and you don't adjust as an edge player, you will get crushed, because they are simply too fast.

Anyway, the games with Michael and vleeseter were always a highlight - still remember the "Steinchenschieber" tournaments? :-)

Alright, I'mma call it "Olympic Rings" as well since that's a much better name than "Trapezoid".

I'm not from the 2000's generation of YINSH players, so I'm quite oblivious (but very curious) to what the "meta" of YINSH was and is.

Hi ~
Great game strategy thank you for the information on the center ring game.

I am curious if you or anyone has written up a response to what happens when you are building trapezoid, and the opposing player puts some of their rings there in the middle in response. My question is, where does one move if the initial plan to place the 'olympic style' rings is disrupted? I see one option as to try to get more of the center covered with the remaining rings, and seems like the other option is to try to work on a line to the edge. There must be more appropriate reactions, so I am looking for good reinforcing strategy or layouts. With all the better players I have played, seem to understand a nuance of ring placement that I am still learning about.
