Tournament settings changed mid-tournament out of my control

It seems plausible that perhaps, whatever was done to fix the other bug, unintentionally caused this new bug. But of course I'm just speculating.

It's reasonable speculation. We are all unwitting beta testers whenever they deploy a tweak to the tournaments framework.

Well, the commonalities are, that both threads are about tournaments of type "Group-stage", and the other thread is about a bug that was repaired yesterday while this thread is about a new bug that arose yesterday. It seems plausible that perhaps, whatever was done to fix the other bug, unintentionally caused this new bug. But of course I'm just speculating.

Yes, sorry, I didn't think of it from this perspective, you could be right, because clearly something has happened to group phase tournaments yesterday, that has led to this. It has led to the default being applied to "number of players to qualify" in every group phase multiplayer elimination ever to have happened.

I heard back from the Heat devs, who have passed it on to the tournament devs. One thing we don't know currently, is this bug just applied retroactively to existing and past tournaments, or will it currently affect all future tournaments too, impossible to currently tell as groups aren't set until a tournament starts, and you can only see details in the groups themselves. In the short term it will destroy a number of tournaments, eg. I am hoping someone can just cancel my tournament now, as it's early enough to the point that it's just pointless playing a zombie tournament, where it's clearly unfair that players have been eliminated that shouldn't have been, and the numbers won't work from this point so it will end up probably crowning multiple winners, skipping players etc.

The issue itself is now fixed, all tournaments group phases have now had their numbers reverted back to the correct number to qualify. However, you may find the damage is already done in your tournament if it had many games finishing in the last 24 hours.
