It's the same as stepping into a boxing ring and saying, "I feel uncomfortable hitting someone in the face." So why did you put on the gloves?

Fair comparison, but I think games and boxing land a bit differently for me

I enjoy competing, just not at the expense of someone else clearly having a bad time. Was curious if others felt the same.

Chess is a fight.

It also can be:
Fun

when you spot a clever move
Stressful

when you realize you made a mistake
Satisfying

when a plan works
Addictive

when you want “just one more game”
People like chess because:
It makes you feel smart and creative
Every game is different
Winning feels earned, not lucky
Even losing teaches you something
So basically, chess is:
A thinking game that feels like a battle, a puzzle, and a challenge all at once.
Anyway it not a fight

I don't see why you assume the loser in the game is "clearly having a bad time". Is that how you are, only enjoying it when you win? Is this projection?
You've said above that they're asking you to play again. They wouldn't do that if they were having a miserable time.
Someone above accused you of being too nice, but honestly, consider the possibility that you're being condescending. They're not little kids who feel crushed when they lose.

I've been wondering if this isn't projection and/or a humble brag.

I think you’re reading intent into this that isn’t there. I’m not assuming people can’t handle losing, and I’m not projecting my own enjoyment onto them. I was describing a personal emotional response to winning in certain contexts and asking if others relate.

I think you're reading intent into this that isn't there. Winning and losing are a part of the game and it's expected that players can handle it. Players that cannot shouldn't be at tables. If you're throwing games over this something wrong is happening. You're managing to throw yourself in disarray over so-called sympathy towards players who are probably just playing a normal game and have no idea why you're making such a fuss about it.
