What the heck was the point of the game page interface trying to replace the "play now" interface??

What was wrong with the "play now" interface ???

Is it okay if I bad mouth BGA like this given that I am a volunteer for BGA ??

I just don't get it.
This happened after they had tremendous unprecedented growth during the pandemic (I was part of that growth). Supposedly the Play Now page was confusing for new players to the site, and I guess the single-game lobby is friendlier because you don't have to worry your pretty little head with too many details and options.

You shouldn't underestimate the amount of data they probably gather. BGA must have data about how quickly people get into games and how often they use certain options in which type of lobby. And before they made the change towards the new lobby, they must have tested it a lot. There are dedicated UI testers and I suppose users with different experience levels have been live-monitored.

These major changes on a site like BGA do not happen without testing and monitoring. Minor changes do but you don't make changes on your main assets / mechanics without some feedback loops.

In fairness, there were complaints that the Play Now page was extremely slow to load and often failed to load altogether (too many elements generally). That said, I don't see those complaints (or the slowness) since they've made improvements to the general infrastructure. And also we're probably seeing more slowness and complaints about problems in games themselves.

Getting into games is one thing. Getting into games with the correct settings is another. And because you can't quit games without karma penalty, games with wrong settings are likely still played out. I do wonder if the rate of people getting booted from games (or getting time penalties) has changed.

Perhaps the original reasons for adding the new interface are no longer relevant, but eliminating that newer interface would cause too much confusion.
