I just started playing this game & I don't understand how you earn any ELO points.
I've had the game end where I had some tiles in my stack but earn nothing.

Generally speaking, in a 2-player game (and I see you’ve only been playing 2-player) you have to win to gain Elo. What you have at the end of the game doesn’t matter, unless it’s “more points than your opponent”.

In other words, Elo is not a participation trophy (except for the very first time you play a game where you get 1 Elo point even if you lose). Once you get above 100, you can *lose* Elo as well, even if you have "tiles on your stack" or whatever the scoring happens to be for a game. There is an entry for Elo in the FAQ, as well as many forum threads discussing it (although you can't search for the word "Elo").
