The important thing in your comment:
Where the tie is between 2 players, head-to-head results as tiebreakers would be much better.
This score differential tiebreaker features only in Round Robin group stages of tournaments with 2p games. It seems to be a standard setting for that format. (Perhaps it's used it other tournament formats, but I haven't come across it yet.) Question is: how do you find tiebreakers when 3 or more are tied? Score differential is an easy one to understand and unlikely to need yet another tiebreaker. The logic seems to have been: make it the default. It's easy to understand, and everyone can simply adjust.

It happens regularly that three players end up on the same score within their group in the tournaments I've played, or even 4 players being tied on points. (Abtsein's Expert Terraformers tournament is the example that comes to mind). An example: this summer I was in a group with 5 other players, with a 4-way tie for 1st place: https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?i ... oup_586506

It's not fun when you are facing a loss already if your opponent starts to milk their engine for another generation and builds a monster score. The prospect of a major contribution to a big score differential encourages this. I found it mildly annoying when I first encountered it, on the receiving end of someone inflicting an extra generation when he was in a won position already (that was in an earlier run of the tournament, somewhere in springtime). Now I just factor it in.
