Also, fundamental attribution error and perception bias apply. People notice games where there are extremes of luck, and when there aren't, they likely attribute their losses to "bad luck" as opposed to their own skill. They tend to forget about the games where luck seems pretty even on both sides. So it feels like the bad luck situations happen more than they really do. As people have said on these threads before, you need to keep a consistent track of what happens over the course of MANY games. Start with 20. Observe ALL of them, not just anecdotally the ones you remember as being bad. If 20 show a pattern of luck, keep going. See where you get to after 100 games. OK, now we might be seeing the start of something. Though even at that point, you still need a LOT more data for your sample to be valid. But generally, people aren't willing to track it properly. They just go on vibes.

As to why they don't join existing threads? Sometimes they do. It doesn't really matter. They still say the same stuff about how random is not random because their game didn't follow a perfect bell curve in terms of its dice distribution.

So you want to confirm it? Well, go ahead; I'm sure we'll all be very surprised if you actually do.

I usually find when people like you come to the forums to complain, it's because of a game they literally just played. Nobody sits on this stuff for a week or generally even overnight before posting in outrage. So, looking at the game (of Catan, of course; it's always Catan) you just finished, I find the following dice rolls:

Code: Select all

8,7,5,4,7,11,4,9,3,3,10,8,7,11,4,9,9,7,4,12,12,10,5,7,7,7,6,5,6,9,9,6,8,5,10,7,6,7,7,3,10,7,5,7,8,6,7,6,9,11,4,3,10,6,10,8,7,3,8,11,7,5,8,9,6,9,8,3,7,3,6,6,6,10,6,6,7,9,7,4,7,8,6,8,8,9
Perhaps you'd like to show me where in there "3 or 11 fall five-six times in seven dice rolls"?

Breaking things down, here's a little frequency analysis of the game. There were 86 rolls; here's the number of actual rolls for each value and the expected number of rolls (rounded to the nearest integer).

Code: Select all

  roll actual exp
    2 0 2
    3 7 5
    4 6 7
    5 6 10
    6 14 12
    7 19 14
    8 11 12
    9 10 10
   10 7 7
   11 4 5
   12 2 2
I do not see anything untoward at all here.

Maybe you should stop with the name-calling and educate yourself, and actually look at your "luck", because if you're not winning it's probably your fault and not the dice.

I don't know if developers read this forums but if you do this purposely you need to stop being greedy little developer no life pricks, because its getting out of hand. I play every day 5-6 games and at least 2 times I lose on this bs and its ALWAYS a premium player that gets this "luck".... Please fix if its a bug or stop it because its obvious....
Surely there are better things to do with your life than make up blatant lies on a board game site.

Even if it was true... so what? You can get premium for free, go ahead and try it.

Ha! I almost made the exact same comment on one of the other recent instances.

I do enjoy the double top secret premium dice feature however. My 100 ELO in Yahtzee proves it.

I've had to stop playing Catan, IRL or online. Just too rage inducing for my own good :)

If someone had a legitimate case for premium favoritism that would be a real BGA problem. Though given the quality of such threads so far, that doesn't seem to be a cause for concern.

But yes to this, it's straightforward enough to get premium and watch as... you get the same old luck as everyone else, sometimes swinging in your favor, other times not.

Hahaha. To be honest, part of the reason I'm still not premium is because I don't want there to be any suspicion that I'm being advantaged by being a premium member.

Joke's on you, everyone knows the site is rigged for non-premium users. You can't fool us! :P

On a more serious note, a non-premium account does have the ability to dodge other non-premium accounts in 2 player premium games. An awkward detail of BGA's premium system, though I doubt many people intentionally went for that side effect.
