But is it really volunteer work?
Yes, it is still mostly volunteer work. And when it's paid, it's usually paid by the rights holder for the game, not BGA.

Because Board Game Arena belongs to Asmodee since 2021, which is the worlds biggest game publisher.
People keep acting like being acquired by Asmodee means they somehow have carte blanche access to all of Asmodee's resources. As I said in other threads (because people keep trotting this out like it's some sort of mic drop moment), Asmodee's most recent
annual report is almost 200 pages long and BGA is only mentioned twice in those 200 pages:
Digital platforms such as Board Game Arena provide opportunities for online engagement, with millions of games played annually. These touchpoints serve not only as promotional tools but also as sources of information about player preferences and behaviors. By supporting both casual and competitive activities, asmodee sustains ongoing product development and provides dedicated spaces for interaction. This active community involvement generates crucial early feedback and word-of-mouth momentum, directly influencing future product development and distribution strategies.
Across channels, asmodee continued to expand engagement opportunities through hobby and mass retail activations, structured retailer programs, and digital platforms. Board Game Arena (BGA) played a complementary role by lowering barriers to entry, enabling discovery and onboarding of new audiences, and extending engagement beyond physical gameplay.
These mentions sound a lot like them saying what they
extract out of BGA, not a commitment to putting resources
into BGA.
