To those saying Canadians need to realize it's not about you: you are correct but this is a know your audience thing, this is a site where saying sucks in chat gives you a reminder warning. The backlash about releasing the name should have been expected

The hard work shouldn't be thrown out or name changed. Just an acknowledgement would have been smart

Thought the same.. Oof... feels a bit tone deaf there. I get it's a popular game and all.. buuuut
I agree 1000%. I would have liked to have seen this delayed or renamed or something else. Trump has made this a hot button issue for every patriotic Canadian. I don't think I'll be able to even venture playing this game. And it looks like it would be fun. But I'm a proud Canadian and Trump is an asshole.

Forget politics, play board games, that is what this site is for.

BGA is an international site, and nothing to do with politics, please respect that.

It's a great game, and a very nice implementation. Thank you BGA and thank you KuWizard. Play it, or don't play it - your choice.

If BGA implemented Puerto Rico and many people said “this is insensitive to the people of Puerto Rico”. Would you reply with “hey, BGA is an international site, and nothing to do with politics, please respect that.“

It’s because BGA is an international site that they HAVE to be sensitive to their conduct and their product and service. I understand that people not from Canada would not see this as a big deal, but it IS a big deal to Canadians, and many people on BGA are Canadians. Canada is one of the highest consumers of modern board games.

So while, as a Canadian, i don’t feel that BGA needed to rename the game (that is silly), they probably should have either delayed it’s release or at the very least, put out an official statement recognizing the situation. Their silence is deafening.

I am Danish.
It has to do with the context in the political climate in North America. You can't simply dismiss people's current feelings because the event isn't affecting you. And yes, I know many people that don't want to play Secret Hitler based on the theme alone.

Puerto Rico has also had an entirely new updated version done, because people were upset how they portrayed slaves as "workers". Heck, even the "thief" in Catan is no longer a black token.

These things matter to people and I think it's disingenuous to shrug it off and say "you're too sensitive". People's feelings are legitimate, whether you understand and can relate or not.

For me, the game in of itself is not offensive. I know it's been around for years, and I am familiar with the title. But BGA releasing it now is a big screw up on their part imho. It shows tone deafness and yes, I understand that these things are in development for months if not years. BGA could have released the game port now and addressed the current climate with a message. Instead they decided to ignore that, just plop this on their front page and walk away.

There are many people on BGA who are not deep into the board gaming world and have never heard of this game. So immediately it's going to feel hurtful to them to see this message in giant letters on the front page of BGA.

The fact that it's been a day later, and this thread is 66 messages deep now, and still nothing from BGA or "Dr. Click" who posted the original message is very telling.
I get what you are saying but the theme of this game has nothing to do with the United States trying to incorporate Canada as the 51st state. The 51st state of this game is a new, post-apocalyptic state built on the ashes of the former United States. Yes, Trump has used the phrase "51st state" but to punish the developers of this game for the choice of this term by someone 15 years after their game was produced is the reverse of what has happened with games like Puerto Rico, which trivialize a historical event in the past. They knew better...Trzewiczek could not possibly have known who was going to appropriate this term, and for what purpose.

Dear Board Game Alliance,

When I opened your website today to play some Carcassonne, I felt as if I’d been splashed in the face with cold water. Seeing a large advertisement for a game called "51st State" in the current political climate felt like even my game time was being invaded by real-world politics.

As a Canadian, I've recently endured former allies from the USA feeling free to mock or threaten us on social media. The pressure from foreign-funded political parties pushing for annexation or separation has increased, and I’ve even had canvassers come to my door seeking support for a referendum. I’ve lost friends over these issues, especially during the recent election, as polarization has reached a boiling point.

I understand that the world does not revolve around Canada and the USA, and that "51st State" is a popular game that’s been out for over a decade. Still, featuring it so prominently right now feels tone-deaf to Canadian subscribers and users. It minimizes the very real anxieties we’re experiencing as our allies talk about betrayal and take actions we never thought possible.

I know that the designer, Ignacy Trzewiczek, has stated the game’s setting is entirely fictional and post-apocalyptic, with no intent to comment on real-world politics or advocate for annexation. He’s also acknowledged how talk of annexation is deeply troubling, especially for those with a history of conflict over sovereignty, and that current tensions—including trade disputes and tariffs—are affecting the board game industry and people’s lives.

As Trzewiczek told the National Post:

“If anyone, any politician, in any part of the world is talking about annexing another country, we’ve been there and we don’t like it,” Trzewiczek told the National Post, referring to the centuries-long history of conflict between Poland and Russia.

“So for us, it’s terrifying, and it is pretty difficult to understand that it’s really happening in the modern world.”

But “51st State” as Trzewiczek envisioned it in 2010, 11 years after he founded Portal Games, is set in a much bleaker and perilous modern world known as Neuroshima, which was born of a war between mankind and AI.

I hope you’ll consider the broader context and sensitivities when featuring games with titles or themes that can feel loaded, especially during times of heightened political tension. Thank you for your attention and for providing a space where all gamers can feel comfortable.
