I'm working on a JavaScript snippet that basically brings Hanabi back to what it should be. It doesn't sound like we're going to get what we want, so I plan to do it myself...

I hope to have it fully working in the next couple days.

Hello,

Hanabi is my most favorite game on BGA. But I am not a big fan of new look and interface. Yes, you can say, the graphics is now modern, but the old look was simple and everything was very clear there.

Only pros I see are:
1) Big numbers on cards
2) "Black powder"

But then the cons:
1) Giving the clues takes so much time, the game gets slower
2) Discard overview is too small and is not good to recognize the colors (mainly green vs blue), same with clued cards (numbers)
3) Players who are playing Hanabi on BGA only will not be familiar with "table look"
4) With more players, when you want to see all the players cards, you have to unzoom and everything gets too tiny
5) Bomb tokens as picture?? Why ??
6) Clue tokens - I think on left should be what you have left, and on right used clues (then why black / white background?)

To be honest, I have played 4 games only with new interface. First was with experienced players and was very slow (maybe due Black powder, but anyway), the rest ended up before end - abandoning. I am unhappy :-(

This looks like what it should be. Very good job!

I can't even begin to list all the problems with this update (but take a look at the bug reports coming in).

In summary, it has extremely serious problems, both functional (rules violations) and usability (on all devices and browsers).

It does have some positives (the game elements look great, for example) but the overall quality isn't even at the point where I'd move it from alpha to beta. Deploying it like this was a HUGE mistake. This should be moved back to beta ASAP, and if it isn't tested with significantly more rigour than the first time, it should initially be deployed as a separate game alongside "old" hanabi until the kinks are ironed out.

I'm very much hoping you'll do more testing on different browsers and screen sizes. All I'm hearing is "it should fit" when it clearly doesn't for many people.
I understand that must be devastating feedback after all this work, so I feel for you. There are good suggestions in here (and a lot of unconstructive hate, sure) to get this to a point that is acceptable for everyone.

Also the animation of cards is... wrong. If you play the 3rd card from the right, the animation shifts the cards on the right to left... and then all cards to the right... and then draws a card from the deck.

It should be: Play card. Shift cards from the left of that card to the right to new positions. Draw card to the left.

It was like this in the old version too and it never made sense to me.

Hi
In fact, i Think everybody have only one question:
will u allow player to choose the old version and allow players to play like before, and enjoy again the game or ll continue to say that "everybody is always negative at the beginning, that u ll improve and that people ll be use to it" (as it ll be NOT the case) ????,

we want our old intuitive way to clue, thats not a compromise, many of us ll not play anymore if u keep your undigest, unfriedly way to clue, who is the basis of that game... I think many of us ll just cancel their membership or not renew it if u keep ingnoring us with the ONLY REQUEST that we have: have the opportunity to play with the old version.

Look how people are giving a comment for the firstime? we all know that u did great effort but be honest: u shoudnt change something who was already perfect

This interface is just awful. The one who comes up with this petty idea deserves to be fired. Change it back to the old one.

Hm, just tried 2p game. The clueing is so annoying, the game takes approximately 2times longer due this, than before... Sorry, but this is very bad UI "improvement"... Pls, move the old UI it back! :!:

I agree, but we don't replicate every aspect of the physical game in the online space.
No, we don’t, but on the other hand there is a certain amount of value to be had from having certain connections to the physical game and the experiences that many players have in face-to-face play. We should neither ignore the connections to meat-space play nor be slave to them.
brucellosis wrote: 06 November 2020, 01:47The old clue system was an elegant representation pictorially of how we give clues: eg. do I want to give the player a colour clue or a number clue? I will select the number or the colour, then click on the player's hand.
Except that usually, I’m primarily interested in giving a clue that touches a particular card. That’s what I went looking for the first time I played Hanabi on BGA, and it wasn’t there. Switching to seeking clue first, rather than card first, when translating my intent into interaction with the game, wasn’t hard to do, but it did require gaining understanding first and then deliberately learning that approach. I can see that this new approach follows my first thought patterns quite closely.
brucellosis wrote: 06 November 2020, 01:47The new system is inelegant, non-pictorial, relies on written words, and actually inconsistent with the physical table - in that it requires you to pick an individual card, but then pops up options based on all the cards in their hand.
Actually, it does tailor the options depending on which card you pick. You might like to take a closer look at it when next you play. (It allows you to clue the colour or the number of the card you pick. If you choose “more options...” it will further allow you to clue colours or numbers that are not in the hand at all. But it won’t let you choose a colour or number found only on another card in the hand. For that, you need to pick the other card.)

I have, however, given a suggestion concerning how to improve the cluing UI in a post earlier in this thread, with an eye to preserving the wordier approach that I think will suit many newer players (as long as they read a supported language) while providing a less fiddle alternative for players who prefer a streamlined UI.
