Just click on the "play" item in the main menu to access the old lobby.
Here is the URL :

You see the confusion? This is the reason to eliminate the new lobby.

The new lobby is the most unintuitive and causes a lot of time waste compared to the old lobby. By now it's just suffering from the sunk cost fallacy - developers put so much time into changing the system and they refuse to delete it even though practically everyone hates it.
It's time to pull the plug and go back to the designing board. The current version can not be fixed. It is all kinds of bad. It displays the wrong kind of data on top and the useful data is hidden from the main view. Just horrible all around.

Will there ever be a way to "turn off" the new lobby if a player prefers the old one?

No need to turn off it, just use the old one if you prefer.
The only annoying thing linked to the new lobby is the replay button at the end of the game.
But it’s not a big deal to click on the "Play" item of the main menu and then to create a new table.

Last 20 Beta games 16 are card games. I thought this was BOARD Game Arena?

Card games are board games too!
I'm not the biggest fan of card games either, but my assumption is that, they are (relatively) easy to develop, that's why people go for it, it is not the BGA team who develop the games (mostly) but volunteers.

I know how to use the old one, I am asking something else. Just because there's a way around it, it doesn't mean it can't be improved.
