You can play AA online through the Keldon AI.
you can but not with the alien orb which is literaly what makes the expansion different from the base game

without the orb it's just the base game with a few more extra card added and nothing more

Actually the base+AA is the most well-balanced and streamlined experience so far.

I would suggest BGA just implement the new cards to speed things up. AA is far more worth the effort than GS.

I have a question about the mechanics of the large goals. From my memory of the rules, if there is a tie for the larger goals at the end of the game, each player who is tied for the requirements but doesn't have the goal tile gets 3 points (either from the tile never being awarded or from a second player meeting but not exceeding the leading player.) As far as I can tell this hasn't been implemented in the current iteration. Is this true or am I missing something?

Rules never say about 3 points extra in tie. If some players ties in "larger goals", no one get the tile...

I looked at the rules and found this at the top of page 4 of the gathering storm rules:
At game end, for each “Most” goal, award a 3VP goal chip to each player (satisfying the goal’s condition) who is tied for most and who does not currently hold its tile, due to it either having been earlier claimed by another player or being currently unclaimed (after several players satisfied or exceeded its condition by the same greatest amount on the same phase).

Yes, I checked. Players who reach the objective and don't get the tile scores 3 VP -only in high number of-
