I think streaks should be worth more points - if you get a run from 0-5, you should gain 10 points instead of 5. Maybe a card in a streak can be worth double - so if you have a streak of 0-3, it would be worth 6 instead of 3. That will make streaks just as powerful as progressing inventors.

What about a scoring of a streak
0-1 as 0+1=1
0-2 as 0+1+2=3
0-3 as 0+1+2+3=6
0-4=10
0-5=15 and so on?

In my opinion, streaks are plenty balanced, you already get points for winning the card, the streak can essentially make a card worth +1. So 3 VP for a round 2 card or 4 VP for a round 3 card is about the best action you can get.

I think people overvalue the character upgrades...you shouldn't ignore them by any means, but there are other good ways to earn points that are fairly balanced. 3 of my last 4 games were with yellow, terrible by upgrade standards, but I managed to win all of them against good opponents by using other scoring methods. Inventor cards + streaks as well as the 2 & 3 VP tokens. Upgrading early isn't as powerful as people seem to think...really you can get away without any until the final age. I'd rather snag a 3 VP token in the 1st round and wait until later to upgrade.

Upgrades are needed to have 1st picks in Age 3. Without upgrades you will probably have no 1st picks in age 3. And all your hope is good 2nd and 3rd picks.
