I have some suggestions to remedy this (even for turn based games):
1) Add a distress button/menu option/chat line to indicate that you may not be able to get back in time. The input method needs to be fairly obvious to both the player in distress and the message obvious to other players in the same game.
2) Display a % on #distress acts per game for players signed up for games pending. Intolerant players get a chance to boot b4 start.
3) Keep count of how many times each player has kicked people out. Possibly a 2nd counter for kicks after distress call.
4) Display a % of games a player has kicked people out in games pending. Again, possibly with distress kicks separately.
5) Allow filtering the Play now page on a multitude of parameters, including the value on 2) & 4) above (close to 100% unwanted games shown for me).
I think this idea should work for both real time & turn based games.
Possibly skip increasing counter 3) if long enuff time has passed since overtime start. Definition of long enuff should depend on game speed of course.
It seems to me this would be fair for both sides. Better chance to get compatible players in your game.
Personally, I hate games that do not finish after I have invested time in them. Thus, I want to avoid impatient players and prefer to give people a chance to return even a bit late. I also understand those that don't, especially in real time games.
BTW I believe have <5 timeouts in 5+ years and no quits at all. Never dropped below perfect once I got there. I have few emergencies, but can appreciate people who e.g. have babies that need urgent attention etc.
