But if you play a blocking move simply out of spite, or because someone else is winning, it is simply that - a losing mentality.

It's probably happened to us all, but when you're in the lead or if you ever see an intentional blocking move for the sake of it. It is hurting the player who plays the block more. They obviously don't realise it, but It's a losing mentality. You can either learn from a loss, or you can cry about it.

You can look at it the other way, you've intentionally helped the other 2 players.
I would never hurt my own position for the worse, but as I said when i can calculate the outcome and see that I do not lose position I prefer to block the greedy player. I'm not saying they are doing anything wrong, at many times it is just a risky play, and I'm certainly not annoyed by it in most situations. Many times I do this even if I'm winning, so it has nothing to do with a "losing mentality".

Then it sounds even worse, because you are deliberately sabotaging one player and favouring the other two. When at the same time you could just stay out the fight when it's nothing to do with you. Considering blocking as the default action is not correct, IMO.

It could well be a subjective decision - everyone thinks differently, for the player you're sabotaging they may feel they've played the way that you are originally expecting - to them they played the best move first. The whole first section of this thread is people considering the same situation and acting very differently. Your blocking play could come back to haunt you in the next game, maybe there is a downside you haven't considered.

In most situations in R14 there is an "objective best move" for almost all players and situations and then you can be more or less greedy. When a player is taking their second best move which is my best move, they already started by blocking me^^ I do see how this can be looked at from different angles, but I would almost feel equally bad for the other 2 players if I would let the first players greediness pay off and get both the best and second best move due to me just accepting his greed and ending up before them.

My personal take is that it's only kingmaking if the player isn't picking their best move.
Someone securing their own growth or taking a big pile of wood is not kingmaking imo.

The scores at the end of the game is very telling, if you think someone is kingmaking, and then at the end of the game the scores are 43-42-42-33, with that person you think is kingmaking being the 33, I say you have a fairly solid case.

It's a competitive game. There will almost always be one player who is more affected by any move than the other players. When I'm playing a game, my only objective is for me to win. If I can't win, my next objective is to do as well as possible. If that disadvantages another player, well, they should have played better and not put themselves in a position to be disadvantaged.

The complaints in this thread sound like they're coming from a bunch of children who were given participation trophies their whole lives.
