A filter for number of games played would help with that. I would definitely use it (for the same reason).FrankJones wrote: ↑23 July 2025, 05:54 Either way, I try to avoid playing someone who's listed Eli might be a lot lower than the player's actual Elo.

Same here. By the time I started playing on BGA, I was already a veteran in several games.FrankJones wrote: ↑23 July 2025, 05:54 It might not be a multi-accounter. It might just be someone new to the site but with great experience at the game from playing other sites or on the physical board. (Myself, for example: Pente, Connect6.)
In Century: Spice Road, there was a sudden influx of veterans when someone on another site shared the news that the game is available on BGA. The top of the leaderboard here got completely replaced in a few weeks. I bet it did not sit well with the old guard.

Experienced player makes sense in terms of winning the game, but I've seen numerous times an account with 0 rating and 0 games played have mastery of the game and the interface. When I was new to bga it took me some time to get used to the interface. Familiarity with the interface is obvious based on play speed.h_illes wrote: ↑23 July 2025, 07:49Same here. Depends on the game. Some games are implemented really well in terms of being able to find things you want, especially if you're familiar with the game. There are many games where I don't feel I had to spend any time becoming familiar with the interface, or where I might have become familiar enough halfway through or by the end of my first game (and others where despite having played a bunch, I still end up misclicking and not being able to find what I want).MikeBakken wrote: ↑23 July 2025, 14:32 Experienced player makes sense in terms of winning the game, but I've seen numerous times an account with 0 rating and 0 games played have mastery of the game and the interface. I would love this idea. Should we post it as a suggestion? There are already so many suggestions with hundreds (or thousands) of upvotes that are still pending, but this one is very easy to do, so maybe it would be implemented?

When I first started regularly playing here approximately 6 months ago, I was a veteran of Terraforming Mars, and my profile would have shown 0 rated games played (of any game), and yet I was crushing players, and very easily using the interface. After playing 500+ times on other platforms, it took me maybe 5 minutes to grasp the interface.
Also, there are some abstract strategy games with no hidden information for which the entire turn consists of clicking one spot on the computer screen. Even a first-time player on the site would have no trouble interacting with that kind of interface immediately.

When Memoir’44 was implemented here the community ported over from the old online of Memoir’44.
Most of those players had played Memoir’44 for over ten years. Only a few had some problems adjusting to another interface. But most of us took to it like a duck to water.
That made for some lopsided battles I can tell you.
