I'm not sure I like calling it "Karma," but it seems like a nice system that will stop people from overreacting when they get an occassional red thumb.

If a player concedes the victory, it is considered a quit-before-the-end?sourisdudesert wrote:We're very lucky to have 97 good games on BGA, and to enjoy the nicest community of players: YOU! To build this community, we tried to build a reputation system that makes sure your opponents will be nice, and to avoid sore losers who quit games before the end.
Because I've seen it happen and it sucks.
i liked the idea, btw.

Whew, good timing. I hadn't gotten a red thumb in about a year and a half and probably played over 4000 games. Then got 4 in the last two weeks. Glad not to see and worry about that 3700 green to 26 red ratio anymore. Don't they know what a nice guy I am?

Re: Introducing: new reputation system and Karma (☯)
is it possible to make it 2 karma bars? one for tournaments and one for normal games?
because if you get on a round robin tournament with 10 games and you fail to play it for some reason, you can end up watching your karma going from 100 to zero in like 5 days. and it would not be a fair demonstration of the player's reputation. he can have 10000000 games played, but if he lost the last 10, he's screwed forever.

Skipping players didn't give me plus 1%.

i also think this is problematic for tournament games, especially if something comes up and you get punted from a raft of games. or if you forget you registered for a realtime tourney and miss all of the games - it's why i only sign up for turn.based tourneys now. is there a floor of zero, or will someone have to play out of the negatives ?? if there could just be an overall karma penalty assigned for a tourney, that would be awesome, but i have no idea how that could be implemented given the variety of tourney setups and situations.MrWatchdog wrote:is it possible to make it 2 karma bars? one for tournaments and one for normal games?

i think the new karma system will work quite well. but the numbers might be tweaked a bit once you get more than a month's data.sourisdudesert wrote:How are Karma points working exactly?
- Karma points are always between 0☯ and 100☯.
- New players on BGA start at 75☯.
- Each game you finish without any overtime: +1☯.
- If you finish a game, but went over the time limit during it: +0☯.
- The first time you leave a game in progress on BGA : -0☯ / warning message (tolerance for beginners).
- Each other time you leave a game in progress on BGA : -10☯ (-20☯ if you already left a game less than 3 months before).
- If your Red thumbs represent more than 10% of the thumbs you received : alert on homepage + Karma cannot go over 70☯.
- If your Red thumbs represent more than 20% of the thumbs you received : alert on homepage + Karma cannot go over 40☯.
if 75 is considered 'normal', i think the 10% red thumbs received should cap karma at 60, with the 20% red thumbs received capped at 40 karma.
leaving a game in progress (after the first one) ... i would shorten the -20 penalty window to 2 months. however, i would increase the karma penalties for leaving (-15 / -25) if the PERCENTAGE of early exits out of games played is more than 2% (1 in 50). that way, if someone plays more games, the exits would be less penalizing than for someone who plays fewer games who quits the same number of games in the same period. of these 2 elements, i feel more strongly about the percentage of quits versus the recency of quits.
and instead of the 0 for overtime completions, i would assign a -1 karma if you are overtime but complete the game.

I've been telling people for years that I'm perfect, now I have proof!
Re: Introducing: new reputation system and Karma (☯)
So, if a player is a serial jerk I can no longer view the collection of red thumbs to give me some warning?
Re: Introducing: new reputation system and Karma (☯)
Also, this system is absurdly easy to exploit for the cheaters that already multi-box for ELO...in fact just by playing the ELO boosting games they're also getting a karma boost.

We are fighting against this exactly like we do for ELO.PhotoJoe wrote:Also, this system is absurdly easy to exploit for the cheaters that already multi-box for ELO..
No, but his/her Karma is affected (see FAQ).PhotoJoe wrote:So, if a player is a serial jerk I can no longer view the collection of red thumbs to give me some warning?
If you forget about your tournament and leave 10 games, then 10 opponents get a bad experience because of you. Eventually we may have an intermediate penalty for "not showing" at a tournament game, but still there should be a penalty.is it possible to make it 2 karma bars? one for tournaments and one for normal games?
Yes, it may be adjusted. This is quite easy to fix.senatorhung wrote: if 75 is considered 'normal', i think the 10% red thumbs received should cap karma at 60, with the 20% red thumbs received capped at 40 karma.
