As an aside, I'll keep an eye out for games that don't have them. While I'm generally not bothered by them, having the option to turn on or off makes it easier for all.
I play earth since ages turn-based and I don't have one so for sure there is an option to deactivate.

Yes, it's not an option in the hamburger menu though, only a toggle on the bar when the timer appears. So, yes it's there, but there's only a limited time when you can disable it. I'm not sure if that's an issue or not - it's better than not being there at all, but I feel like being able to change that setting at a time when you're not under pressure would be better, given some of the discussion in this thread. I did comment as much on the bug report after it was closed by the dev (since there already is an option to control the timer), but there was no further response.
