Finding an opponent for some long-running games can be difficult. Turn-based play is not always a very good solution though, I've got some experience with playing civilization that way. The longest time we were able to continue a game (with very dedicated players) was about 1 year and the game was not yet finished. You never run those games to the in-game conclusion, but stop at the moment the winner is very clear. So, you should have some kind of "surrender" system in place so games are actually closed.

What about enabling us to develop AI for some of the games? That might also help with people having trouble finding an opponent for long games. You could have a REST-API available so we can run AI bots on our own servers. Either keep ELO score of the bots like they are regular users or consider them "practice" games and exclude them from ELO-scoring.

I also hope they don't add an async play option. It would water down the main offering of the site--great live play. I realize some people prefer the async, and there are other sites that do that well. BGA is nearly one of a kind in offering these eurogames live.

What I think should ideally happen to capture the spirit of async is this: all players have the option of agreeing to pause the game and resume it LIVE later. This is what one of the previous posters suggested. So credit him/her with the idea.

This makes sense as a "Time Machine" and something that both I, and I believe, many people, WOULD be interested in. However we could also retain the option of a single-sitting playthrough. I agree with another of the previous posters that part of the joy of gaming (for me) is making impossible decisions on a time constraint. In other words, pressure. That's why BGA is my #1 choice.

Tell the people who are happy with those sites that they "aren't working." You might not like it, but that doesn't mean it isn't working for certain people. Maybe the people who run them aren't interested in volume and it's working fine for them. Not sure how you can judge that.

Well, that makes two of you who obviously don't get that everyone is not like you, and doesn't need to be like you. I don't "need to love" time pressure. Games are for enjoyment, and you cannot decide for other people in what way they enjoy a game. It sure as heck isn't hurting either of you two if other people can like something about a game besides time pressure.

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome. No one is forcing you to play turn-based with me. Come of think of it, I'll never play live with you either since you so obviously do not want me here.

I didn't force this site into adding a turn-based mode, and never asked them to, and could've lived the rest of my life perfectly fine if they hadn't. But they did. Really, seriously sorry I found this thread, and really sorry to see such sorry judgments made on those of us who happen to like turn-based.
