It's not about fear of losing Elo. It's about making the games fun. When a 700-800 Elo player faces a 100-200, they win 99% of the time, and most games are complete blowouts. It's just not very interesting. A proper Elo filter would fix this.
yah arena game quality gets worse and worse as time goes on, getting matched with 100-150 elo players who have a 25% win rate is a waste of time for everyone. And this is with elite-only filter. The fact there's a filter but you can still get matched with players in the bottom 10-20% of players is quite something.

A solution would be Arena ranking calibration ie if you dont play a game for 3 days you start to lose 10 points per day or whatever. Assume what you mean is get #1 by a margin and then just not play

No, it should. Because elo is not some kind of competition, like Arena is. Elo is an evaluation of your skill, and every game you play "for real" (that is not set to "let's not count this game" from the beginning, i.e. as "friendly", or that is not neutralized by agreement) should count.
Right, but this isn’t Chess. This is a game of wild variance and luck, as has been proven time and time again. Therefore, either eliminate the effect that Arena has on elo or create groups. Why support a structure that dis-incentivizes higher elos from playing?

Arena rank goes up, then down, then up again. The variance of TFM precludes anyone from reaching 2400 Arena points - I think the champion usually has around 2000 or 2100? So, trying to end the season at the peak of an upswing is the way to go.

Congratulations to Bogeyun for reaching the top at least twice during the season, and finishing on top.
