That is the best idea I've heard so far.

Seems like the best idea to me too.

Perhaps with an additional caveat that if the other players choose to abandon the game immediately they get a clock penalty, but if the game is ended long enough afterwards to sort out connection issues, they get a leave penalty.

One problem that I have encountered is that I was unfairly given late game and quitting penalties because my game froze due to a bug. I do not think my reputation should suffer because of a bug in your system. You either need to have some sort of appeal process, or a means to prevent people from being labelled due to a system bug as opposed to being a poor sport and quitting.

Is this what makes players' timers never exceed five minutes these days? Thanks.

Hi,

We decide to take your remarks into account and will do an update today.

The main evolution will be: zombified (= skipped) players will get an ELO penalty when abandoning the game. This way, skipping a player turn and then abandon the game will be the strict equivalent of the old "expel player" option. Players who wants to gain ELO points will still have to finish the game.

To be continued...

Thanks for listening to feedback. I personally liked many of the changes you made (as you said, if a game is a couple moves from the end, skipping a turn might be preferable to abandoning the whole game). But I understand the concerns others' have expressed.

I did encounter a major problem with this on a game of Northwest Passage today. Before you ask, I already submitted a bug report but let's be honest, a single instance of a bug on a fairly unpopular game isn't going to get much attention in the fix queue. :D

anguishh abandoned immediately after joining and out of curiosity I tried skipping his turn to test the new system. Now it just says "application loading" and I can't interact with any aspect of the interface, even so far as proposing to abandon the game. Now I'm thinking I'll probably get a clock penalty as well. http://en.3.boardgamearena.com/northwes ... e=12063376

The new system is interesting, but it is fundamentally flawed in two ways:

1) I don't much care if someone is slow. I care greatly if they fail to play the game (quit). With the new system quitters appear to merely be slow players. I cannot restrict quitters from games I create - I can only restrict based on slowness, which, again, doesn't matter much to me as I always have another window open where I can keep myself busy until they play.

2) Skipping a turn can often be an advantage in games. This, by itself, destroys the new system, as it means that in such situations people will delay so as to gain a winning advantage.

I am not saying the old system was great, but this one seems worse.

One more thing while I have your attention: disconnects are sometimes happening due to your servers (or your ISP). You can probably detect that situation, as when it happens many players chat about having problems at the same time. I suggest that whenever a significant fraction of players on the site disconnect then you skip penalizing them. Traceroute and ping to your server, from a site on some other ISP, may help you isolate your server/ISP issue.

Well it hasn't taken me long to run into one of the downsides of these changes...

I was just playing in a 3 player game of seasons, when i received a phone call during one of the last turns - in which I had a lot of actions to take to get rid off 5-8 cards or so.

i made my apologies saying, making known I was delayed due to a phone call, and when I reached the over time limit, going through my actions, one player made me skip my turn as soon as i was a second over the limit!!!

I will remember this game as being the first game on BGA, and I played a couple, in which I used a bad swear word on someone, player dharkham.

When you run into him feel free to remind him of what a massive male sex organ he is
