It's a bit of a paradox, seemingly, right? If the site is (to some extent) non-functional, how can BGA communicate with members.
And yet, When this happens, I see splattered across the top of every BGA page, "WE ARE EXPERIENCING ISSUES RIGHT NOW. PENALTIES WILL RE RESCINDED. THERE IS NO NEED TO REPORT BUGS".

So, if that is possible, why not ... just disable the bug forums until everything is back in working order ??
As far as I can tell, this might just be an oversight.

As of a minute ago, BGA is showing me error codes. If I go to the community -> bug reporting page, it shows a banner indicating bug reports are not necessary. It appears to me the button to create a new bug report is removed.

However if you go to a game page, then use the hamburger menu to start creating a bug, it does not seem to prevent bug creation or even warn you. So maybe most players report from the game page and are never blocked or warned about the site problems? Is this intended? Who knows.

It would not surprise me in the least if the person who implemented the block of reporting on the bug reporting page itself doesn't even know there is another pathway to get there. Just like the person who broke the clocks for tournaments with playing hours maybe didn't even know that playing hours in tournaments are a thing. I am sure that there are users of BGA that have a greater holistic understanding of BGA features than some of the site devs.

Well, regardless of the cause, it pisses me the hell off, and I want it to stop.

This does happen though. I literally looked at a bug this morning for my real job where a function is being allowed somewhere it shouldn't be, because we globally updated the UI a bunch of years ago (yes, years) and added a new pathway. That pathway didn't account for the fact that in this specific area, this function is disallowed in certain cases, and that logic needs to be checked for the new pathway. Code bases are giant things. Ideally, you want there to be one method that does the function, and all pathways go through that method, so a new pathway will pick up existing logic, but humans are unfortunately human and there's lots of places you can stuff that up.

Theoretically, a bug for this kind of issue should be relatively easy to fix. Assuming you have the dev capacity to do it. Which also isn't always the case.

If you spent 15 seconds reading a bug report and concluded it's nonsense, you should close it "not a bug" instead of leaving it hanging.

If someone is flooding the system with bad bug reports, they should be blocked.

If you're donating your time for free to a for-profit corporation, that's your dumb decision. If BGA can't afford to pay people, they have to increase prices (which I think they're doing anyway).

Since I am a paid/premium user, yes I do have an expectation that someone will seriously read all the bug reports I file or vote for, provided I'm not flooding the system with pointless reports.

1) Spending 15 seconds per bug report of dozens of inane bug reports is annoying for unpaid volunteers.

2) This site functions because of the "dumb" decision of people to be unpaid volunteers. If your stance on that is that the "dumb" people making "dumb" choices to be unpaid volunteers should also then be expected to do extra work .... Well, [ I am redacting my own thoughts, so I do not get moderated].

3) On your third point, I agree. :) See, we found common ground. Key phrase being, "provided I'm not flooding the system with pointless reports."
I have no problem responding to legitimate reports. But when people write a report that says, "The site was down for maintenance and I could not play", I just want to reach through cyberspace and smack that person upside the head. I mean, what exactly is the "bug" ??

And, as you noted:
"If someone is flooding the system with bad bug reports, they should be blocked."

Yes. 100%.

So, all in all, I appreciate your post. :) Sounds as though we are on the same page.

Great topic. So here my answers, many will duplicate those posted by others:

1. Ranking/ELO system for all coop games, forced on game design. There is no real reason to not have one. There are games on BGA that have it, or something very close to it.

2. Game testing on Alpha phase. Its absurd now. You have BGA reviewers that played few time and voted to move game that was unplayable at all, with 2 major crashes while was still in alpha.
You have 1000+ people in game test group and maybe 50 are actually doing something, and rest are complaining that you post your observations and looking for players on that group chat. What for they joined there in first place?

Test by playing game won't find many bugs anyway. Even perceptive and dedicated person can't really test things without proper tools to change game states. So you end with game that is years after fully published and still have basic rules not fully implemented, which as I recall is a reason to NOT move game to BETA.

3. Guru system. For years now there is "more option will be added soon" message and nothing is done. BGA created that feature for something and then stopped. So for now guru's are only for arena settings vote. Not even real vote because 1 option is always a current arena settings, and there is not even vote reset between vote 1 and vote 2 stages - absurd.

4. No real handle of "kingmaking" and similar problems. A lot of excuses here instead.
Clearly is a problem for community, based on many topics, and only what you can do is give RT. To what point? If a many people give same player public RT with "kingmaking" reason, will that alert a mod to do something? Even that is unknown.

5. Bugs not being addressed with idiotic "by vote order". Number of votes is good way to evaluate proposition, but not bug. For example: table crashed bugs are critical, but affects only few people at that table, so who more you expect to vote on them?
After recent "paintjobs updates" I had few crashed tables. Those were fixed but my report is still not updated, so I assume fix was done accidentally, not based on my report.

6. Replays are just terrible. Hard enough to use it when you want just learn or watch a game. Much harder when you need to look it to give as many information as is possible for bug report, or to make tutorial from it. You don't need to load whole game history and play it step by step so even fast getting to move you look for takes minutes when it should take seconds. And if you write wrong move number you CAN'T GO BACK only forward - absurd.

History loading is also problem in normal play. You don't need load whole game history to make your TB move. Juts recent history. That will cut loading time to 5% in some long games

7. If you want volunteers to do stuff for your page, give them tools. Now those tools are clumsy and make working MUCH harder, so less people want to do it.

8. Much better response to what players want, not what staff (including volunteers), publisher game author, wants but what players of game wants.

9. General revision and change of basically all BGA policies. And communication with players, which is now not really existing.
