I don't have a major issue with your tone. You and I each made a wisecrack, and a 3rd party jumped in and made one too. Seriously, it's no big deal.

I'm not sure how you can say I'm "wrong" about advertising. I stated my opinion. My opinion is wrong? I also stated that I am "puzzled", and that I "fail to see the purpose of some specific types of advertising."

How are such statements "right" or "wrong"?

I am clearly not the intended demographic of advertising, so, yes, much of its purpose will be lost on me. I have stated as such. I also acknowledged the logic behind some of the subsequent comments.

So, I'm not quite sure what exactly it is that you're taking issue with me over. Do you have some personal stake in this? Are you an advertising executive? You seem personally impugned by my remarks about advertising, remarks that were generally innocuous and certainly not disparaging in any way.

As far as being "puzzled" by this.... it's been studied by academics as well as those in the industry. Have you read up on it, or are you just assuming your personal anecdotes and gut feelings are all there is to know? And that you're smarter than all those executives at very successful companies?

I think being "smarter" than those executives is probably the wrong question (and thus the wrong answer). Running a large company isn't done on "smart" alone. Maybe not even "smart" at all? It's done on wisdom (using the term perhaps a bit loosely) and knowledge. It's also often done on instinct, by people whose instincts have (mostly) served them well to get to the top. You probably can't be a dummy, but you probably don't have to be 99th percentile to be successful. In the list of what makes a successful corporate executive, "smart" probably isn't at the top of the list.

Probably. And, people in high places are still fallible. Every year there are quite a few duds advertised during the super bowl. Ads that cost, what, 4-5 million dollars? For each failed ad, some advertising executive somewhere likely greenlit a failed ad.
