Anyone have any advice on how to even begin to get into this game? That rulebook is pretty itimidating! Also, I've never played a serious tabletop war game, but I'd like to try!
For you and all beginners : use PLAYBOOK and not RULEBOOK first.
Read
30.1.2 Training Scenarios Method in playbook and play scenario (solo) in that order : Poland 1939, Scandinavia 1940, France 1940 and finally Main Event 1939-1940 (not Main Event 1939-194?).
During game read RULEBOOK only when you need to understand something.
Don't hesitate to post in dedicated forum.
And STOP to use AUTOMATIC mode for playing, use MANUAL one or play SOLO to learn game.

Totally agree, and though I have played a few such wargames, there is a simple module system that introduces first movement and attack, then the next scenario adds to it so you learn a bit at a time. Excellent way to learn and the only way to eat an elephant!

Wow, unless it's not my favorit genre I am flashed by the games offered here and the development of this community.
Great work!

Both GMT Games and BoardGameArena have made surviving this pandemic so much easier -- I truly don't know how I would have made it through last year without good games and a way to safely play them.
Seeing a GMT wargame (and an impressive one, at that!) here... man oh man, it was like I was tasting peanut butter and chocolate together for the first time!
Thanks so much to all involved with this and hope it's the first of many such titles to come!

Yes, need more wargames on this site. There is an opening for an online boardgame site that has real wargames. This part of the hobby - where I began in 1981 - has been suppressed and sidelined from mainstream gaming too long. Just last year, they reinstated the Charles S. Roberts Award which had been on hiatus for several years.

This looks great. Excited to see BGA branch out like this. Thanks to all parties involved.

How disturbed one can be to make or to play such games?
Take this off the list. Millions of human have died, that was not a game, it was bitter!
Most "wargamers" I think acknowledge to the best of their ability, the atrocities of war. And whilst, game here is a loose term that can mean many things, ultimately, my understanding is that most wargamers have a great sense of respect for the lives lost and the damage that war creates. In a lot of ways, war games help us understand what the situation was really about and gives us the ability to interact with history at a deeper level. That way we are less likely to repeat history.
Youknowwho1887, I value your input and thoughts on the subject.
