I suggested exactly this in emails to Greg this morning and was told they won't be paying us anything. If this stance does not change I'm not sure we can allow our games to remain on the platform. I cannot condone this level of exploitation. Please listen to your community and figure something out quickly.
You probably shouldn't have produced the code in the first place if you were not ok with such use.
This user developed his own game, so he is free to retract the game license itself, not the code.

Have you read the dev license before developping a game ?

Code: Select all

Developers producing software and associated documentation files
(the "Software") to create a game adaptation on the BGA studio platform agree
that the Software:
 - can be used on Board Game Arena (BGA) to run the game, with no limitations
 whatsoever;
 - can be modified by BGA site administrators to fit the purpose of the site, to
 fix bugs or in the purpose of re-factoring;
 - can be freely reused and adapted by developers for other games on the BGA
studio platform.
You probably shouldn't have produced the code in the first place if you were not ok with such use.
I'm the owner of the publisher, the designer of the game, and the artist for it. Nothing in the dev contract covers the use of our images without royalties. This has always been a good faith handshake agreement between BGA and us. They've broken that trust by selling this site to a very large corporate entity. I'd say they broke the trust of the developers too as never once was the notion that this site would be sold for their sole gain, they've constantly claimed that the funds were to "keep the lights on", yet now they've sold and still have no plans to pay developers or publisher royalties unless they lock their games behind premium. All of the work that has built this site has been volunteer, to sell those efforts is highly unethical after framing this as a community project for a decade.

The fact that they've framed these new Asmodee games as an "opportunity" for the developers is obscene. They've just taken a pile of money, and expect the folks on the site to continue producing free labor. Please show me any light in which that seems ethical.

So it isn't a community website anymore, just community-based.

Thank you for the hard work on this website and community. However, this news is greatly disappointing, and I am also concerned that BGA will deteriorate in quality and skyrocket in price following this acquisition.

Edited now that I've read this thread in its entirety and I couldn't agree more that this needs to be front page news.

asmodee.... seems bad. heres to hoping they prove me wrong. glad you guys got a payday... would have preferred paying a larger subscription fee than deal with a company that eats competition to monopolize. thanks for a ground up cool thing that likely will not be here in 5 years.

The fact that this major news isn’t the first thing people see when they log on, or even available anywhere but hidden three clicks down in a forum thread with a vague subject line, tells you all you need to know. BGA knows this move is going to be massively unpopular, and they’ve got no interest in sharing it with users any more than is absolutely necessary.

Put it on the front page. People making decisions about whether to buy Premium access deserve to know this.

Seriously, why is this not announced on the front page?

I was really shocked when I received these news, then run here in the Forum to check what was going on.

I would like to say I face theses news in a very optimistic view, in our boardgames world, more is better! Ther's simply room for everyone.

Carcassonne, along with Terra Mystica, Kingdom Builder, 7 Wonders, seems to be the major games in popularity producing the majority of BGA's profit.

Now enters, Catan, Pandemic and Ticket to Ride... Splendor... Azul (Hopefully)!
Man, this is just A+ grade!

Congrats and thanks for existing, BGA! Long Live BGA!!!

NO

I left Tric Trac when Asmodee bought them and I will leave BGA too if I have to. This is not ethic and VERY naive of you. You just sold BGA to a company that never was interested in letting their games be published on here when BGA was independent. They never supported you, never helped you grow, never believed in you. They ignored you when you were small. And now you think they suddenly love BGA??

They bought you because you’re now big enough to generate money for them. They don’t care about you. They don’t care about the heart of BGA. They only care about money. You will regret this decision in a few months, I promise you.

They will DESTROY BGA and you won’t realize it until it’s too late.
