This game is very toxic. Players can be rude, toxic, unfriendly, and unwelcoming even if you state that you are a new player. Mods do not care and will not do anything unless the players outright say something offensive. Players being rude, toxic, unfriendly, and unwelcoming without saying something outright offensive is completely acceptable.

This is far from my experience. My very first game I was matched with two really great players who taught me basic strategy as we played. One of them became a friend and we play together often. I've played about 30 games and would say 98% of the people I've played with have been kind, even when I made significant mistakes. I think part of it has to do with my own attitude. I acknowledge my mistakes, inform them I'm still learning, and we move on. I'm sure if I deflected the blame and was rude back, it would be a different story. So, just as we must acknowledge our mistakes, we must also acknowledge our part in the toxicity.

It really seems like a rolling a die whether or not you'll get a toxic player.
I've now had at least 3 instances in just 2 days of players intentionally bombing a game because they thought I made stupid mistakes (one of them just because I didn't immediately play a card they thought was obvious I should play).
Then there are really nice players out there, even giving you hints towards strategy of the game.
But so far it seems like 50/50 chance it will be a bad experience.
I also don't want to say I'm a beginner every time because I've played this game for years, just not online and with all the conventions used here (and never got into the fineties of advanced play).
Isn't there something that can be done about this? Like putting a mistake-friendly button into the table creation

That would be Friendly mode (which was once called Training mode). Since there’s no way to automate the enforcement of human behaviour, it’s not a guarantee, but you are likely to get players who are not so worried about mistakes (which can pull ELO down) in Friendly mode, which (in addition to the name) does not affect ELO. You might also add in the description the reason you are using Friendly mode - “learning conventions” or the like.

I would also advise restricting your games to ranks similar to your own, except when explicitly asking higher-ranked players to join a Friendly game as trainers.

Some players join games with far lower-ranked players hoping that their low ranks are due to being new to the site, not new to the game or the convention, and that they will get a big ELO boost out of it, and then they may deliberately lose the game quickly in hopes of moving on to another game to make up the loss. It’s not only an unethical strategy for ELO boosting, I’m not convinced it is even an effective strategy, but it happens anyway. But these players will usually be filtered out by setting an upper limit on ranks permitted to join. (I used to like playing in games permitting up to one rank above my own, so that I was learning from people a little better than me, back when there was a rank above my own.)

it's because BGA doesn't care to moderate them. they don't see it as a toxic behavior cooperative games go out the window with rules. things you can do to compensate: thumbs down, ignore them, give those players a bad experience by taking up time and intentionally losing.
this behavior is not tolerated on other platforms and if you defend yourself in chat against these people you are the one who gets moderated
