If you inform me that something i said or did was insulting to you, inadvertently or otherwise and in good faith, I would apologize.
Doesn't mean my opinion has changed.
Well, I don't think you should. I'd just acknowledge that our views are incompatible and that's it. I don't understand why people seek apologies from people who obviously aren't going to be on the same wavelength anyway. Seems empty to me.
it has nothing to do with being on the same wavelength, we can disagree without being insulting.
or maybe this is why people just block you. you dont care if you insult others.
You may not have read the discussion in question. It's not like we threw insults at each other or anything. I just said something that the other person interpreted as insulting. I still stand by what I said, so I think it would be hypocritical to apologize when the thing they found insulting is something I still believe. In my opinion apologies have to mean you regret what you did, otherwise it's just empty.

when I say apologize, im not saying apologize for your stance, its apologizing for causing harm to another. If you seriously dont regret causing distress/harm/trauma to another person, yeah, i see why people just block you.

I am not sure why I am jumping into this highly derailed thread, but ...
So, am I understanding this correctly?
Person A says, "Here are my thoughts on [some issue]."
Person B says, "I am upset and offended by your thoughts on that issue."
Person A is then supposed to apologize? Why?
I say a lot of things that upset or people, and most of them are things I would never apologize for.
Examples:
"I found [some film or novel] to be flawed and overrated."
"I do not believe people should be thrown in jail for [whatever]"
"I find cigarette smoke disgusting and rude to subject others to."
etc.

That's like the people who say "I'm sorry that my stance offended you". That's usually not taken well and understandably so. How heartfelt can an apology really be when the person fully believes the thing that caused hurt? They may lament that the other person was offended, but that's more along the lines of they think the person is just wrong to be offended by something like that. It's very backhanded. It's essentially saying "I wish you didn't have the opinion you do and I was free to say what I believe without offending you".
For example, homophobic person says something very homophobic and a gay person feels offended by it. Then the homophobic person says "I'm sorry that my stance offended you. I wish you didn't feel bad about what I said, but I still fully believe what I said". What good is an apology like that? Do you think the gay person would really consider that a meaningful apology?

It wasn't the thoughts they found offensive, it was the specific remarks made that were written to
be offensive, ie. "the user has low reading comprehension" because apparently they cannot make an argument without resorting to personal attacks.

I think you are trying to mislead FrankJones. I didn't target any particular user, I said something like "it would take low reading comprehension for someone to not understand what my post was saying".
The goal was not to be offensive, it was to emphasize that my post didn't require any crazy amount of thinking to be understood, and that therefore there was nothing wrong with it and the people who wanted to nitpick it were just being obtuse.
In my opinion, if that comment had not be written by me, it 100% would have gone unnoticed and people wouldn't have feigned not understanding what it was saying. It's like people on here are making it a national sport to find issues with everything I say.
