FrankJones wrote: 17 August 2026, 20:13 I prefer to play some games real-time, but I do not. Why? Because like the OP, I have a high likelihood of being interrupted and forfeiting.

Two major differences:

1) In my case, the interruption would be an actual legitimate medical reason pertaining to a family member, and
2) Because of this, I simply do not play real-time games. I play all of them turn-based. I choose not to make my problem other people's problems, especially since I know beforehand of the situation I described in reason #1. If situation #1 occurs, it would not be "new information" to me, and so it would be my fault.
But that reasoning only works in that direction. It would make no sense to switch a game from turn based to real time, but the whole point of turning a game from real time to turn based is that those sorts of issues stop being a problem. The existence of that feature actually makes it legitimate for people like you or OP to play real time despite having real life obligations, because you know that if those emergencies happen, you can always ask the opponent to go turn based. That's the whole point of the feature. And if they refuse, then the blame falls more on them that it does on you, because they don't have similar strong reasons to be prevented from playing turn based. They can make their moves whenever they want. So the situations are not at all equivalent.

I think you are being too lenient towards people who don't want to go turn based and are sort of trying to defend them to justify not playing real time, when in reality, you shouldn't consider it normal that you aren't able to play real time games if you want, just because you have real life obligations and because many players wouldn't accept going turn based. Their inconvenience is not more important than your personal situation and your right to still play real time if you wish to.

Someone who is leaving tomorrow for a vacation might wish to switch from turn-based to real time. Or any number of other reasons that might cause a player to be unable to meet the turn-based obligations and thus prefer to finish the game quickly in real-time.

As for what you said about emergencies - yes, I hope that in an actual emergency, people would be accommodating. Again though, the OP wasn't talking about emergencies. The reasons given by the OP are about as far from "emergency" as possible.

In my own situation, it wouldn't be an emergency, just an unfortunate inconvenience, and one that arises multiple times every day. It would be disingenuous on my part to frequently start real time games and then frequently ask to switch to turn-based because of thee known daily inconveniences.

Obviously, nobody can know whether someone requesting an abandonment or switch to TB is having an actual emergency even if that person says so. But I'm willing to go by the honor system. The honor system goes both ways though. Someone with 5 forfeits and 17 clock violations (just in "recent games") likely is not having repeated emergencies, and that does affect an opponent's likelihood of granting leniency.

It's a known fact that forfeits / abandonments / quit games / clock violations show up on a player's profile and can affect that player's reputation and/or Karma and opponents' willingness to be lenient. That's why such occurrences should be reserved for actual emergencies.

An employee who is given 5 personal days a year and uses all 5 by the end of May to go to concerts or other non-emergencies is not going to be given much latitude when an actual emergency occurs and that employee needs a person day but doesn't have one.

The OP in this case is acting in bad faith - starting real-time games against people who expect to play a real-time game, and then asking to switch to a format that was not preferred by the opponents when the game was started, for frivolous reasons that are entirely avoidable.

If the OP wants the option to be able to leave a game temporarily without penalty, the solution is to play turn-based: 24-moves-per-day, since that is as close to real-time as a TB setting can go. The OP is instead not choosing this easy solution, inconveniencing others because of his own weak reasons that are entirely avoidable.

TB-24 is a great setting. It's flexible. The games play fast, but allow for temporary departures from the game for almost any reasonable situation. Even in an emergency, there is a 12-hour time bank and a 12-hour window during which the clock doesn't run, so even then, this setting would be able to accommodate some emergencies.

What valid reason is there for the OP to not use this setting? Because the OP just doesn't feel like it? But then that same OP wants to subject others to the same setting the OP himself is unwilling to just choose in the first place.

OP hasn't posted since page 1. Since then you've been arguing with someone known for either being a troll, or at best not actually listening to the people they disagree with.

I'm just going to leave this here: https://boardgamearena.com/forum/ucp.ph ... &mode=foes

I'm cool with tbhp; we strongly agree on some thigs, and have different opinions on some other things. And when we don't agree, we can discuss calmly without vitriol or insults, which has value in and of itself, since many online disagreements devolve into unpleasantness rather quickly.
