I only give red thumbs to people who I truly do not want to play with again,

I have given a red thumb to at least one player I did/do not ever want to play with again because he heckled me on luck throughout our match. He deserved the red thumb and I wish I could've given him another. That being said, I ended up playing him multiple times because he was rated way higher than me and taking his ELO points felt very sweet.

I should be able to hate someone and still choose to play with them if I want. Why is my freedom to choose who I play with and red thumb being taken away from me?

I'm not sure i like this. I've red thumbed a person in the past, after some poor experiences. But then, after playing with them again, after that time, I saw that I had no reason to red thumb them, so I took it away. I probably would not have red thumbed a person if I knew it was blacklisting them from playing with me.

IF this was an announced feature before the fact, I'd be okay with it.

But changing it after the fact feels WRONG to me.

I approve of this seems to limit the gross red thumbs that where happening.also great way to find out whom don't want to play with you.just simply be the 1st to join,u find out that way without guessing

As a primary discussor of the red thumb issues here, I will have to take a wait and see attitude about the change...

First blush, should be positive...but I believe the primary issue regarding player rating via the thumbs is not to enable the giver (in this case, to remove the thumbed player from their list of potential players) but to empower the receiver with (a) knowledge of who and (b) affording an opportunity to counter the what of the red thumb.

While I appreciate not having to play automatically with a reactive red tumb giver (if I receive a red thumb, that person wont be able to play with me) and that enables some benefit to me, this still seems to be addressing only half the problem... as mentioned, wait and see.

My only immediate comment to those listed is that I do not believe this will be a detriment to the drive by red thumb giver...too many people and games to have their inability to play with past recipients be a major detriment. And no, I believe most of the feedback here does not include people that are big red thumb givers but objectively considering the change.

bive fought this red thumb deal the whole time .I went out of my way to prove red thumbs don't help or improve the game.im 1st in red thumbs and top 5 in games played .I wish positive will help not negative.ist bga promotes negativety in my book with red thumbs just green or nothing.but I do respect here hard work.but ive also acted frustrated which I'm trying to be carefull.

You can wonder all your want, but it's not true in my case, and I suspect not in a lot of cases. I've given very few red thumbs, and I don't do it cause someone didn't say hi, or cause they had the gall to beat me, or silly things. I'm also someone who leaves a green thumb for everyone I play with, except in some rare cases when it doesn't feel right but not bad enough for red. I just left a red one though, I detested the thing saying I wouldn't be able to play him again. I'd forgotten about this and that really rubbed me the wrong way when I saw that.

Part of it is cause people change, we don't always know situations, etc. But part of it is because I don't like it having control over who I can or cannot play with. I don't know why that's hard to understand. I don't like "auto" stuff. I want to have control of it myself. And I'm not "terrified" by it. I just don't like it.

I like this change - it'll stop players from giving out red thumbs for petty reasons.

Doubtful. If someone wants to give one for a petty reason, they'll do it. And worse, since petty reasons aren't in the list of options, they'll pick what sounds like a good reason, so it'll be falsified anyway.

The only thing it might solve is people who think the thumbs are for their personal knowledge rather than a stat that publicly goes on the player, and there's other ways to solve that.

Well, the fault is ours : we didn't make clear wether the thumbs were for the community or for personal "blacklist". So some players are using it to report "bad" players to the community, and some are giving red thumb just because someone doesn't say "hi". To solve this, we have to make a choice, and as there are many many issues linked to "public shaming through red thumb", we choose to make green/red thumb something personal. All further evolutions will go in this direction.

It may be you didn't make it clear, but there will always be people who do stuff whether it's clear or not. Every site I've ever been to that used green/red or up/down thumbs have always been public where everyone could see it.

There's other ways to solve that issue. First, dump the auto-can't play with again thing. You can make a blacklist where players can choose who they want to blacklist. It shouldn't be forced on everyone whenever they leave a red thumb. I just left one and I hated that I had to agree they can't play with me again. I left the red thumb anyway cause that was the more important issue to me and I didn't want to let that stop me. But I certainly didn't like. I don't like something having control like that. A personal blacklist leaves it up to us to make that decision for ourselves.

As to people not knowing, it's just a simple matter of pointing out on the red thumb that this is going to be on their public profile and should only be used if it's meant to warn others about the player, and that if it's just a personal thing, we can leave a note about them, or blacklist them. You can even include the blacklist option right there.

I'm not sure giving a reason is useful because if someone's reason isn't in that list, they'll just pick one and it won't make any more sense than not having a reason. People who leave red thumbs for stupid reasons aren't likely to be concerned about this.

If you don't like the "public shame" thing, just dump the whole thumb concept altogether, although I don't see anything wrong with it. For those who leave these for silly reasons, the recipient likely has enough green that it doesn't make much difference. But if someone has a higher percentage of red ones, it probably has legitimate meaning.
