They do get seeded by previous Arena results I think. Like if you reach elite one season you don't start as bronze the next, you start in diamond or something like that
But what if a strong player took a season off, or is starting new in the arena -- again it was weird to see a strong player in gold, two below diamond, three below elite
If they take a season off they drop lower then again. It would be the same in pro sports. In tennis the Williams sisters used to barely play any tournaments so when they game to the majors they would be ranked lower than what they were.
If they are strong enough then they should move up quickly to diamond or elite in the end, I also personally find that being strong in casual games and being strong in arena are quite different too. I find though progressing in certain ranks a bit difficult in games with fewer players and with all ranking stuff the system discourages the top players from actually playing.
Perhaps if you start in Arena with no rank/hidden rank and based on the result of your first 3 matches you get placed in a league.
