i play some tournaments with friends and what we want is the same effect as a knock-off tournament, but without having people eliminated after 1 round :p

so if we are 16 we would like 4 rounds, if we are 32 we would like 5 rounds, etc, so there is always a clear winner (excluding ties)

any reason why the 2p logic wouldn't be this? or at least have a version that is clear as does something like, round up to the nearest power of 2, and calculate the rounds for that

also, are the rounds somehow dynamic after the game has started? or are they fixed once the tournament starts? right now one issue i have is wanting to see how many matches i have left and the thing just says "automatic", if they are not dynamic it could say "5 (automatic)"

We don't know why it doesn't say the number of rounds, but with only one exception the tournaments I've organized using automatic lasted the number of rounds you would expect. I.e., 3 rounds for 5 players, 5 rounds for 17 players, 6 rounds for 33 or 34 players, etc. It doesn't seem to be dynamic after the tournament starts, because there was a situation where we had a single undefeated player already after N-1 rounds (N is the number of rounds you'd expect based on player count), but it still played the last round.

But if you're playing with friends and you know ahead of time how many people you will have, why not just set the number of rounds directly? The automatic round calculation was added to deal with the situation where it's a public tournament or other situations where you are uncertain how many entries you will get.

we did that before, we would ask for who wants to play, and then set the number of rounds so we would get a guaranteed player with all wins

this means for 16 players it would be 4 rounds (2^4)
for 17 to 32 players it would be 5 rounds (because 2^5 = 32),
etc

but then we have to poll people, and sometimes they say they want to play and then can't, or others say they can't but then are able to make it

with automatic we could solve this, unfortunately it seems the formula is not what we expected

as far as i know the logic is:

# rounds - # of players

8 rounds- 84+
7 rounds - 44 to 83
6 roundss - 24 to 43
5 rounds - 13 to 23
4 rounds - 8 to 12

this was checked by a friend (heyyy David)

and i can't understand who came up with this logic.., why it is hidden, and why after the tournament starts it doesn't say the actual number

one thing that would be cooler is to let us decide the formula I guess, with a text field that could be left blank for the default implementation or filled in a specific format like

4: 8-16
5: 17-32
6: 33-64

etc

Was this for two-player games? Can you post links to the tournaments that don't fit the formula ROUNDUP(LOG_2(P))?

sure, this is an example

https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=432754

111 players and 8 rounds instead of 7 (2^7 > 111)
