If you want to make Karma more friendly to experienced and loayal players you can make the following improvement.
Add invisible Karma points above 100 for players with maximum reputation at rate 0.4 points per game without time penalty. The maximum number of invisible points is 100. Nobody can see this invisible part of reputation. But if a player get a penalty his invisible points decrease first. So if his reputation is 100(45) and he gets a penalty 20, his reputation becomes 100(25), and his visible Karma stays 100. The improvement is needed to players with thousands games don't lose maximum reputation level at random quits.

Yes, this system is out of whack. Out of almost 1400 recent games I have inadvertently left a game or had the game ended by my opponent 18 times. The official percentage with the exact numbers is 98%. Now I have that happen twice within a month and i'm at 80%? Makes no sense.

those who have an issue with 'karma', which may have sprung from an individual religious tradition, but has since become a widely known concept, need to get their heads straightened out.

there are plenty of us who do not subscribe to the religious concept of 'angels', but we understand the principle and its application on this gaming site. i.e. angel = good. that is despite the fact that Lucifer was also an angel once.

likewise, karma is the idea that "you get back what you put out". there are karmic concepts in the religion of angels ... an eye for an eye ... do unto others. so taking offense at a word because of its religious source, rather than its widely accepted principle, is intolerant and small-minded, especially given the world-wide nature of the BGA community.

@sourisdesert: thanks for the quick tweaks to the karma calcs.

That's a very good idea.

demiurgsage wrote:Assuming that people get time out unintentionally, the distribution of quits isn't uniform. That means that even best players will have streaks of random quits. New reputation has no memory, and ruin your reputation of thousands games with a couple of random quits in short time. Like in link below.

Yes, I agree. A player can have a perfect record, thousands of games played, 99% of green thumbs and no quits at all, but due to some extraordinary event (an accident, illness, etc) he quits 3-4 turn based games and suddenly has a very bad Karma.

This is really bad, but it can be easily improved, as demiurgsage has already explained.

Given the world-wide nature of the BGA community, using terminology associated with a specific religion to describe a widely accepted principle seems unnecessary.

The system have been created for that the 'good' karma was between 75 and 100.
But apparently, the players doesn't like to be at 99, even if there is no restriction there :P
