There is an excellent New Model Army song titled "51st state" back from 80's.
Anyway - keep on boardgaming in a free world!
Off their "The Ghost of Cain" album. Forgot all about this song. I'm listening to it right now.

Look out of your windows watch the skies.
Read all the instructions with bright, blue eyes.
We're W.A.S.P.s, yeah proud American sons.
We know how to clean our teeth and how to strip down a gun.
'Cause we're the 51st State of America
Yeah Yeah
We're the 51st state of America.

British band singing about be subjugated to The Great Western Empire (then based in America). As the Brits learned long ago and as we Americans are currently learning, the power center of The Great Western Empire is located wherever the power sits. Rest easy my Canadian friends, it does not sit in the White House.

If people get offended by something like a boardgame title they have far worse problems in my opinion. Why are people so sensitive nowadays? Just dont play it if you dont like that simple.

Gracjan wrote: 07 May 2025, 13:59As to the game itselt. It has a successor titled "New Era" https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/96007/the-new-era
Both games share the same mechanics, New Era being just polished a bit. To avoid or at least reduce the scale of turmoil, I would consider changing the name of the one actually published on BGA (which should not be a legal issue as both games have the same copyright, ownership ect).

That's not a successor. It is a stand alone expansion (out in 2011) from the original version of 51st state (from 2010). The implementation is for the master set whih came after those, 2016, and integrates parts of different expansions. The games are different and it would probably create confusion

Citation needed. You do realize the game is 15 years old, right?
And from a polish designer. And implemented by an UK user

It came before Trump's nonsense. We should be mad that he's sullied the name of this fun, great game. Lots of violent themes in the game, but forcefull annexation of the neighboring country to the north is not a theme at all in this game. Just rename it in your head as "Post-Apocalyptic Settlers"

The people complaining about the time of this release need to get a life. The world doesn’t revolve around America or Canada. This is a good game that is getting released on BGA. Thank and appreciate the developers and thank BGA for being such a phenomenal website. Anyone complaining are so engrossed in politics they can’t find any enjoyment in life, it’s ridiculous.

So dissapointed. Atrocious use of screen real estate. I have no idea how this got through beta testing in this state, presumably only played by people who know all the cards off by heart and have their strategies memeories. The game is unplayable unless you want to be constantly scrolling up and down trying to figure out what you want to do. Not approachable by new players at all.

I'm ready to receive your design mockups. Post them on forums in the 51st State branch and let's discuss.
